Snowslide

McCall, Idaho

9.5 miles NE of McCall, Idaho

Snowslide is a granite swimming hole in a picturesque setting in the mountains east of McCall, Idaho, where a granite outcropping along the creek forms a clear, cold pool below. It sits off Lick Creek Road, the scenic, partly unpaved route that climbs east out of McCall into the Payette National Forest, roughly 13 miles from town near the Snowslide Lake trailhead. The water is clear and genuinely cold, straight off the high country, making it a bracing dip on a hot summer day. It is an undeveloped forest spot with no facilities, and the wet granite calls for careful footing. Late summer, once runoff has dropped and the water has warmed a little, is the most comfortable time to visit.

Knox

Cascade, Idaho

19.8 miles NE of Cascade, Idaho

Knox is a wide, pool-filled stretch of the South Fork of the Salmon River near Warm Lake, east of Cascade, Idaho, known for its sandy-bottomed pools and grassy banks made for picnicking. It lies near Knox Ranch, a historic mining settlement, reached by turning off the Warm Lake Road (Forest Road 22) onto a single-lane paved road that follows the South Fork upstream just before Warm Lake. From the parking pullout a short walk over a low rise and across the edge of the Knox Ranch meadow drops to the river, where the current spreads into a series of calm, clear pools ideal for wading and swimming. It is a peaceful, undeveloped spot in the Boise National Forest, and summer, when the South Fork has dropped and warmed, is the season to enjoy it.
