Disc Golf
Aggieland is northwest Alabama's standout disc golf course, an 18-hole layout in a public park in Hamilton that punches well above the weight of a town this size. Established in 2009 and ranked among the top courses in the state, it has built a real reputation on good design and good variety, drawing players from across the region who make the drive specifically to throw it.
The course offers genuine range. Fairways run uphill, downhill, open and wooded, so no two holes ask the same question, and a crystal clear creek and a pond come into play on a few of them, which adds both beauty and consequence. It's finished properly, too, with concrete tees and DISCatcher Pro targets, the kind of investment that signals a course maintained by people who care. Players typically spend anywhere from an hour and a half to four hours here depending on pace and how many discs go swimming.
It's a public park course, free to play, with restrooms available and dogs welcome, which makes it an easy outing rather than an expedition. You'll find it at 510 10th Avenue SW in Hamilton. Getting there from Highway 78, take exit 11 onto Highway 17 toward Hamilton, go 3.2 miles to a right on 6th Street SW, turn right on 10th Avenue at the next stop sign, and continue two-tenths of a mile to the parking area on the right.
The wooded holes are the heart of the course and the reason it plays well in an Alabama summer, offering shade that open layouts can't. That said, north Alabama humidity is a real factor from June through August, and the creek bottoms hold mosquitoes, so spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons, with autumn colour making October rounds particularly good.
As with any wooded course near water, discs get lost, so bring more than you think you need and consider marking them. Water, insect repellent and sun protection round out the kit.
Hamilton sits in Marion County in the northwest corner of Alabama, an easy detour off Highway 78 between Birmingham and Tupelo. For a free, well-built, genuinely top-ranked 18 with creeks, ponds and real elevation in a small-town park, Aggieland is one of the best disc golf finds in the state.
