City Beach is a 1.6-acre city park at 300 Johnson Street on the north shore of Fountain Lake in Albert Lea, Minnesota, a few blocks from the downtown waterfront. The City of Albert Lea Parks Department runs it, and the city lists it as offering a swimming area with no lifeguards on duty. It has been the town's lake beach since it officially opened in 1928. Fountain Lake is the lake right along the north edge of downtown, a different body of water from Albert Lea Lake.
The beach sits where Johnson Street meets the lake at its west end. It is a short walk north of downtown, and the city's Blue Zones Walkway passes right by it. The city's page for the park lists off-street parking, and the lot sits on the land just inland from the sand that the city bought from the Larson family in the early 1940s.
The swim area is a sandy beach with a roped-off section of shallow water, used these days mostly for wading, sunbathing and cooling off on hot afternoons. Nobody guards it, so swimmers and parents are on their own. The city does not publish depth, bottom or water temperature figures, so check the water yourself before letting kids in. There is a small public dock and a bathhouse with restrooms and changing rooms. Things were busier in the 1930s and 1940s, when the beach had Red Cross certified lifeguards, a summer bathhouse and snack stand open 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., swimming classes, water carnivals and an offshore diving tower with springboards at 8 and 12 feet. Today it is a quieter neighborhood spot, and the city also runs a separate aquatic center elsewhere in town.
Entry is free. The city states that all of its parks are open to the public at no charge, and there is no beach fee or parking fee. City park rules apply: parks are closed from 10:30 p.m. to 5 a.m., pets must be leashed and cleaned up after, alcohol is not allowed without a permit, tobacco and cannabis are banned, and fires are only allowed in designated grills or fire rings.
The biggest hazard here is the water itself. Fountain Lake grows blue-green algae blooms in hot, dry stretches of summer, and some of those blooms can be toxic to people and pets. In June 2021 the city and the Freeborn County Sheriff's Office closed City Beach after a bloom, and in August 2023 the city posted no-swimming signs at the beach and asked people to keep pets out of the lake until the bloom cleared. Look before you go in. If the water looks like pea soup or green paint, or smells swampy, stay out, rinse off with clean water if you touched it, and watch the city's social media for current advisories.
Beyond the beach, the park has picnic tables, a sand volleyball court and a skate park with ramps and rails that was converted from old tennis courts in 2001. The Fourth of July fireworks are launched from City Beach at dusk, so expect a crowd that night. Boating and fishing go on across the rest of Fountain Lake (fishing has stayed open even during algae advisories), and the city's 62-acre Edgewater Park, also on Fountain Lake, is a short drive west.
