Blue Hole is a popular swimming and river-jumping spot on the Buffalo River in Middle Tennessee, about an hour and a half west of Nashville near Waverly. Named for its deep, blue-green water, it's a classic summer hangout where locals cool off, float, and leap from the bridge into the river below.
The centerpiece is the bridge over the Buffalo — informally known as “Blue Hole Bridge” — a longtime favorite launch pad for jumpers, with swimming and wading in the pools around it. Depths vary across the river, offering both shallow spots for waders and deeper water for confident swimmers. To get there, take I-40 to Exit 143, follow State Route 13 south a short way, then turn onto Cuba Landing Road and continue to the river.
Access is through a riverside campground just past the bridge, which also offers canoe rentals; there may be a fee to park or enter, so bring cash and check current access before you go.
As with any wild river spot, there are no lifeguards. Always check depth before jumping — the river bottom shifts with rainfall and the water can be shallower than it looks — watch for current after storms, and keep a close eye on kids. Late spring through early fall is the season.
