Crystal Township Park Beach is the public swim area at Crystal Township Park, a township-owned park of roughly six to seven acres on the east shore of Crystal Lake in the village of Crystal, Montcalm County, Michigan. Crystal Township runs the park and its beach, and the Michigan DNR's 2022 fishery report on the lake describes the park as the shoreline access point on the east side. Crystal Lake covers a little over 700 acres and is unusually deep for central Michigan, reaching about 70 feet near its southern shore, but most of its edge is ringed by broad shallow shoals.
The park sits right at the end of downtown Crystal, between West Lake Street (County Road 510) and the water, a block west of Main Street and next to the township hall on West Park Street. Carson City is about 7 miles to the south-southeast. Parking is in the park's own lots off Lakeview and Elm streets, and the township has also leased a nearby lot from a lakeside resort for extra beach parking. No parking or admission fee is listed anywhere in township records, so treat it as a free public beach, but posted signs on site take priority.
The swim area is a stretch of sand along the shoreline below the park, which has been through a redevelopment project funded in part by a $300,000 Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund grant. Plans for that project called for a new public beach and a terraced, gentler slope down to the water, and the township board has since approved repair work on the beach sidewalks and bought new swim buoys. The bottom near shore is sand with scattered stones, enough that the parks board planned a volunteer day to clear rocks from the beach area. The Crystal Lake Association describes the lake as clean, with few weeds to foul boat props, and it pays for regular invasive milfoil surveys.
There are no lifeguards mentioned anywhere in township records, so plan on swimming unsupervised and keep children within reach. The shallow shelf drops off into deeper water farther out, and a swimmer once drowned in about eight feet of water not far from the public beach, after which the county sheriff urged the township to keep throw rings at the beach. Stay inside the buoyed area, because the rest of the lake is open to motorboats and the sheriff's marine patrol works it in summer. Dogs are a sore point at the park; the township has discussed banning them from the beach, so check the signs before bringing one. Hours are not published online, and portable toilets are contracted for the summer season.
Beyond the beach, the park has a picnic pavilion that can be reserved for parties, grills, picnic tables, a playground and restrooms, and downtown Crystal's shops and restaurants are a short walk away. The village hosts a Fourth of July parade and fireworks over the lake, which make the beach crowded that week. Anglers use the same shoreline in winter for walk-on access to the ice, and the DNR boat launches on the north and south shores are a few minutes' drive away. For current rules, call the Crystal Township office at 217 West Park Street.

Thereās little arguing that Crystal Lake is the greatest natural resource within its township, but an argument is now being made regarding recreational access. During Wednesdayās Crystal Township Board meeting, the board entertained a presentation by David Fisher, a landscape architect at Wolverine Engineering & Surveyors Inc., who presented conceptual designs showcasing possible improvements to Crystal Township Park.
