Erb's Pond is a small, spring-clear pond on the edge of Dillon, Montana, in the Beaverhead Valley, and it holds a warm place in local memory as the kind of neighbourhood swimming spot that towns used to have and mostly no longer do. For decades it was simply where Dillon kids went on a hot afternoon: the east end was always the best water for swimming and jumping, and the pond's owner made a point of welcoming people rather than fencing them out.

The story behind it is the good part. The pond and the surrounding ground belonged to John and Phyllis Erb, and Mr. Erb famously let people come and swim, going as far as putting a step ladder over the fence so visitors could get in easily and rigging a rope swing out over the water. The Kiwanis Club of Dillon maintained the property for public access from the 1980s onward, keeping the tradition alive across generations. It's an unusually generous bit of local history for a private landowner, and it's why the pond stayed part of Dillon's summers for so long.

Beyond swimming, the pond and its surroundings picked up a second life. The open ground between the road and the water became a favourite local spot for paintball and airsoft games, its mix of cover and open lanes making it a natural playing field. Fishing was never the draw here, but the pond has plenty of crayfish, and rose hips grow thick along the banks.

The important caveat is that the property's status changed. The Erb family expressed interest in donating the land for public use, and the Beaverhead Trails Coalition acquired it in 2020, with the nearby ground along the Beaverhead River now associated with the Cornell Park Fishing Access Site. That transition means access arrangements, permitted activities and any posted rules may look different from the informal, ask-the-owner era many people remember. Anyone planning a visit does well to check current status and rules locally, with the Beaverhead Trails Coalition or Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks, rather than relying on how it worked years ago.

Summer is the season, when the valley heats up and the water is worth getting into; the pond is spring-influenced and stays cold. Dillon itself sits in beautiful southwestern Montana country, close to the Beaverhead River's famous trout water and the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest, so the pond makes a pleasant stop rather than a destination in itself.

Bring water shoes, sun protection and a trash bag, respect any posted signage, and treat the place with the same care that kept it open and welcoming for forty years. Erb's Pond is a reminder that a town's best swimming spot is often just somebody's generosity, maintained by neighbours.
