Camp, Hike, Kayak, and Swim

George T. Bagby State Park is a Georgia State Parks property of roughly 700 to 770 acres on the east shore of Walter F. George Lake, the Chattahoochee River reservoir that most people in the area call Lake Eufaula. The park sits on land the state leases from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which built and still runs the lake. Its swim area is a short sand beach on a small point a few hundred yards from the boat ramp, with a roped section of open lake water in front of it. The town of Fort Gaines is about 4 miles to the south.

To get there, drive north out of Fort Gaines on Georgia Highway 39 (Eufaula Road) and turn west into the park at 330 Bagby Parkway. The former lodge reopened in late 2025 as the park's visitor center, where you check in, and the beach and boat ramp are reached from the park road on the point west of the highway. Display your ParkPass on the dashboard wherever you park.

The beach is sand over a gently sloping lake bottom, and the swim area is marked with a buoy line strung between posts. This is reservoir water, not a pool: it is usually tinted and warms up considerably through a south Georgia summer, and the level rises and falls with Corps operations at the dam, so the waterline and the amount of exposed sand can change from one visit to the next. The park lists swimming as seasonal. Its website does not mention lifeguards, so plan on watching your own group. Note that the park's swimming pool is a separate facility in the new camper amenity area and is open only to overnight guests (10 a.m. to 7 p.m. in season). Day visitors swim at the lake beach.

There is no admission charge for the beach itself. Every vehicle in a Georgia state park needs a ParkPass, which is $10 per day or $70 for an annual pass good at all state parks, bought at the park kiosk, by QR code on arrival, or online. Golfers' parking is covered by greens fees, and overnight guests pay the daily pass only once per stay. Park hours are 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., and the office is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call the park at 229-768-2571 before a trip to confirm the beach is open for the season.

The park lists alligators among the wildlife visitors may see on this part of the lake, so keep children close at the water's edge and stay out of weedy coves. Boats launch from the ramp nearby, so stay inside the buoy line. State park rules keep pets off swimming areas and beaches, and alcohol is not allowed in public-use areas.

After a swim there is plenty to do. A December 2025 renovation added 10 cottages, a 32-site campground with full hookups, sport courts, a picnic shelter and more than a mile of lighted lakeside walking paths. The park also has a marina and fishing dock, a nature trail, the 18-hole Meadow Links Golf Course, and access to the Phenomenon Trail, a bike route to the Walter F. George Dam. The lake is known for big catfish and bass, and paddlers can explore the wooded shoreline and cypress stands near the beach.
