I-10 North Beach
Lake Charles
Swim
I-10 North Beach is the City of Lake Charles' public sand beach on the north shore of Lake Charles, the lake that gives the city its name. It sits along North Lakeshore Drive between the I-10 Calcasieu River bridge and the Lake Charles/Southwest Louisiana Convention and Visitors Bureau at 1205 N. Lakeshore Drive, a short drive from downtown. The City's Parks and Recreation Department runs it, and the visitors bureau calls it the only white-sand inland beach in Louisiana. Some listings call it the Lake Charles Beach Picnic Area, but locals and the city just say North Beach.
The beach sits right beside the interstate. Take the downtown Lake Charles exits at the east end of the bridge and follow North Lakeshore Drive back west to the beach lots. The visitors bureau lists parking at North Beach as free, and the city lists no entry fee, so this is a free beach. City hours are dawn to dusk. Overnight parking is not allowed along the lakefront.
You swim in the open lake in front of a long strip of sand that runs east from the pickleball courts toward the visitors bureau. The city lists no lifeguards and no marked swim zone, so Louisiana's standing swim-at-your-own-risk rule applies. The city doesn't publish water depths. Summer water is warm, and the visitors bureau names June through August as the best months for swimming. Wind across the open lake can push small waves onto the sand.
Check water quality before you go in. The Louisiana Department of Health samples North Beach weekly from May through October for enterococci, bacteria that point to fecal contamination, and it has put this beach under swim advisories in past seasons. In the results for the week of September 27, 2026 (sampled September 29), Lake Charles North Beach was under an advisory. An advisory is not a closure. It means elevated bacteria and a higher chance of stomach illness, skin rashes and other infections, and an LDH doctor told KPLC that children, seniors and people with conditions like diabetes or cancer face the most risk. When one is in effect, the sign at the sampling spot is flipped to show it. Look up the latest weekly result on the LDH Beach Monitoring page before a visit. The city keeps a small alligator pond a short walk east of the beach and asks visitors never to feed the gators. Glass containers and campfires are prohibited, and traffic noise from the I-10 bridge is constant.
The beach doubles as a sports park. It has dedicated pickleball courts, beach volleyball and beach soccer areas, picnic tables, benches and an open play area. New permanent indoor restrooms and outdoor showers went in after a 2025 groundbreaking. The lakefront promenade connects the beach to the Cypress Alligator Pond, the visitors bureau and Veterans Memorial Park, and leashed dogs are allowed. The city also uses the beach for events: the Pumpkin Chunkin' contest with the Region 5 STEM Center lands on the sand on November 7, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and the shore is a popular place to watch Fourth of July fireworks over the lake.
