Lake Barkley State Resort Park Beach
Cadiz
Camp, Hike, and Swim
The public beach at Lake Barkley State Resort Park sits on the west shore of a small peninsula in the park's northern section, facing the Little River arm of Lake Barkley about 5 miles west of Cadiz in Trigg County. The park covers roughly 3,700 acres on the eastern side of the lake and is run by the Kentucky Department of Parks. Lake Barkley itself is a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reservoir on the Cumberland River, and the beach looks across open water toward the wooded shoreline of Land Between the Lakes.
From Cadiz, take US 68/80 west and turn onto State Park Road at the park entrance. Stay on the main road past the turnoff for the lodge and follow it north toward the campground; the beach road branches off toward the water before you reach the campground loop. There is a paved lot right behind the sand with a bathhouse, restrooms and basketball courts, and a second, upper lot nearby. Campers can walk down on the short Wagon Wheel Trail, which runs 0.3 miles from across the road at the campground pavilion to the back of the beach parking lot.
The swim area is a modest crescent of sand on a sheltered cove, and like most reservoir beaches the sand gives way to a softer lake bottom as you wade out. Lake Barkley is a shallow-sided, warm southern reservoir, so the water near shore heats up quickly in June and July, and it can look cloudy after heavy rain. There is no current to speak of, but boat traffic on the main lake throws wakes onto the shore, and the drop-off depth changes with the Corps' lake levels, which run higher in summer than in winter. The park's listing mentions designated swimming hours and a bathhouse but does not say lifeguards are posted, so keep a close eye on kids and weak swimmers.
The beach is free and open to the public, not just to overnight guests; the state park system lists it as its public beach, and Kentucky's ten state park beaches have long been free to use. It opens Memorial Day weekend and closes after Labor Day weekend, and the park says the season depends on water quality testing. That condition is real: the beach has stayed closed in past seasons after tests found E. coli and spring flooding damaged the area. If you are driving any distance early in the season, call the park office at 270-924-1131 to confirm the beach has passed its tests. The lodge's outdoor pool and the indoor wellness pool are reserved for lodge, cabin and cottage guests, so the lake beach is the swimming option for day visitors.
Everything else in the park is close by. A picnic pavilion and picnic tables sit just south of the beach, the 79-site campground is a short walk east, and the boat ramp is a little farther up the same peninsula. The Cedar Grove Trail starts from the upper beach lot and links with the Wagon Wheel and Wilderness trails to make a 5-mile loop through the woods. Over at the lodge you will find the Windows on the Water restaurant, the marina with fishing, pontoon and ski boat rentals, tennis and pickleball courts, and the Boots Randolph golf course farther inland.

This trail connects the main lodge facility to the beach. Trail distance is measured one-way. Hikers must first walk a section of the Lena Madesin Phillips Trail to reach the start of this trail. The trail outlet is in the upper parking lot in the vicinity of the beach. By crossing the beach parking lot you will find the trailhead for the Wagon Wheel Trail. This will lead you to the Campground and the Wilderness Trail. Combining the three trails creates a 5-mile loop. The Cedar Grove Trail features a grove of eastern redcedar, a lake viewing area, and a small spring-fed creek with a bench next to it and exposed limestone. Difficulty: Moderate Distance: 2 miles Route Type: Linear Parking: If you are starting from the lodge, park in the lower parking lot near the east wing. If you choose to trek from the beach, park in the upper parking lot of the beach area. Things to Know: There is one steep section coming off of a ridge that can be slippery in wet conditions.
