Lake Macbride Beach

Camp, Canoe, Hike, Kayak, and Swim
Lake Macbride Beach is the sand swimming beach in the north unit of Lake Macbride State Park, a 2,180-acre park managed by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources in Johnson County. The beach faces south onto Lake Macbride, a reservoir of roughly 900 acres that, like the park, is named for University of Iowa botanist and conservationist Thomas Macbride. The DNR lists it under this name as one of the state park beaches it samples each summer.
The north unit sits at the end of Highway 382 (County Road F-16), about 4 miles west of Solon, and the park address is 3525 Highway 382 NE. Follow the park road past the lodge to the main beach lot. The lot sits above the shore, and a staircase leads down to the concession building, the rental docks and the sand. If stairs are a problem, call the concessionaire at 319-624-2315 and staff can let you use the service road instead. On hot weekends the lots fill. When that happens the DNR treats the park as full and has closed the entrance to new cars for a couple of hours at a time, so come early.
Swimming happens inside a buoyed area in front of the beach. State park rules keep swimmers within the ropes and buoys and allow swimming only between sunrise and sunset, and inner tubes and air mattresses are allowed only in the beach area. No lifeguards are on duty, and the beach signs say plainly that you swim at your own risk. They also ban pets, glass and alcohol on the beach. The lake has no current, but beyond the buoys it is open water shared with boats. A 10 horsepower motor limit applies from the Friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day, and boats must keep under 5 mph all year.
There is no charge to get in. Iowa law bars the DNR from charging anyone to enter a state park, so parking, the beach and swimming are free. Fees apply only to camping, shelter and lodge reservations, and rentals. The concession, run by Lake Macbride Boat Rentals, opens Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekends.
Check water quality before you go. The DNR samples the beach weekly from Memorial Day to Labor Day for E. coli and blue-green algae toxins and posts results on its beach monitoring dashboard and hotline (515-725-3434), updated on Fridays. This beach has a history of problems: park staff warned against swimming during an algae bloom in 2019 after E. coli warnings the summer before, and it was on the DNR's swimming-not-recommended list ahead of Labor Day 2023. Drowning is the bigger risk. Five people drowned in the lake between 2019 and 2024, including a swimmer near the beach in July 2024, and a student and teacher on a school field trip drowned elsewhere on the lake in September 2026. Kids and weaker swimmers should wear life jackets.
The rental shop at the beach rents pontoons, pedal boats, canoes, kayaks and paddle boards, and sells food, bait and firewood. The 1-mile Beach-to-Dam Trail starts nearby, and the 4.5-mile North Shore Trail runs along the lake to Solon. Anglers come for spotted bass, walleye and muskie. A modern campground in the same unit takes reservations only, from April 1 through November 15.
