Montezuma Hot Springs is a beloved free, primitive soak in the foothills just northwest of Las Vegas, New Mexico, where geothermal water rises from deep in the earth to fill a series of rustic rock-and-cement pools beside the Gallinas River. Steeped in centuries of history and refreshingly unpretentious, it's one of the most accessible and welcoming wild hot springs in the state — and it won't cost you a dime.

The springs are arranged in a few different soaking areas, each with a cluster of pools ranging from a mellow 95 degrees up to a toasty 120, so you can pick your perfect heat. Set against the backdrop of the historic Montezuma Castle (now part of the United World College), the pools have a timeless, communal feel, and a short, easy walk from the parking area makes them accessible to almost everyone.

A note on the setup: the springs sit on private land owned by the college and are lovingly maintained for free public use by a local nonprofit (the Friends of Montezuma Hot Springs). There are no lifeguards, attendants, or developed facilities, so this is a self-guided, take-responsibility kind of soak — treat it with respect. The pools are open from dawn to dusk, free of charge, and clothing is required.

To get there, follow NM Highway 65 (Gallinas Canyon Road) about 6 miles northwest from Las Vegas. The soak is wonderful year-round.
