Hot Springs
Ritter Hot Springs is a historic hot-springs property in the remote high country of northeastern Oregon, near the tiny community of Ritter in Grant County, between Long Creek and the John Day River country. For generations it was a rustic, old-fashioned soaking retreat — a modest hotel, cabins, and campsites gathered around warm mineral pools in a quiet river valley — and it holds a fond place in the region's history.
Please note: Ritter Hot Springs is currently closed to the public. The property has not been open for general public visits since 2020, is under new ownership, and has been undergoing structural and safety repairs. Any access is by private arrangement only. Do not travel here expecting to soak or camp — verify the current status directly with the owners before making any plans, and respect that this is private property.
Should it reopen, historically the springs operated seasonally (roughly Memorial Day through Labor Day) with day-use soaking, a handful of simple hotel rooms and cabins, and tent and RV sites in a peaceful, off-the-beaten-path setting. For now, it's best appreciated as a piece of eastern Oregon hot-springs heritage rather than a destination to visit.

Be careful. Pay attention to posted signs and always test the waters before you get in. Some hot springs can get up to boiling temperatures. Be sure to drink plenty of water to combat the dehydrating effect of the spring.
Be respectful of other soakers and the hot spring. Don't hog the pool. Camp at least 200 yards away and keep fires in designated areas. Keep your pets out of the water and never pee in thermal feature. Glass bottles should never go near a hot spring.
