Disc Golf

Vollrath Park is where disc golf in Wisconsin began. Its 18-hole course opened in 1980 and is generally recognized as the oldest disc golf course in the state, which makes a round here something of a pilgrimage for players who care about the sport's roots. Set in a handsome city park in Sheboygan, a short distance from Lake Michigan, it has been drawing throwers for over four decades and still holds a solid 3.9 out of 5 across more than 950 community reviews.

The course itself is a pleasure. It's a wooded layout with genuinely varying elevation, running from wooded hills down to greens with a lake view, and it's rated easy overall, with mostly short holes and a few blind shots to keep you honest. A typical round runs about an hour across roughly 1.4 miles of walking. Short and wooded is a combination that rewards accuracy and touch rather than arm strength, which is part of why it has aged so well: the course tests the same skills now that it did in 1980.

Vollrath's ravine-and-hill terrain is what gives it character. The park's rolling ground means throws are rarely level, and the mature trees frame fairways tightly enough that a wayward drive gets punished. That blend of forgiving length and unforgiving trees is exactly why beginners can finish a round here and better players still find it interesting.

The park is at 198 Park Avenue in Sheboygan and it's free to play. Facilities are good: basketball courts, pavilions, bathrooms and a playground, so it works as a family outing rather than just a course. Vollrath is also known locally as a sledding hill come winter, which tells you something about the terrain.

Spring through fall is the season, with Sheboygan's lake-moderated summers pleasant for a round and fall colour making October especially good. Wisconsin winters put the course under snow, though the hardy still throw.

Bring bug spray for the wooded holes, water, and a couple of spare discs for the trees. For a free round on the oldest course in Wisconsin, with lake views, mature woods and forty-five years of history under your feet, Vollrath is well worth the stop.

More Information

Vollrath Park

Vollrath Park is home to an 18-hole disc golf course that opened in 1980 and is generally considered the oldest disc golf course in Wisconsin. From wooded hills to greens with a lake view, this course is both fun and challenging. Vollrath Park is also the location of Food Truck Mondays, typically held on Mondays from around 4:00-8:00 p.m. from May through October. Vollrath Park has tennis courts, basketball court, a pickleball court and a playground. With its hills that ripple down to create the Vollrath Bowl, it is also a popular sledding destination in the winter. Then newest addition to Vollrath Park is "beat! A Musical Garden", an interactive music initiative for kids of all ages. Located near the playground, it captures the essence of a small orchestra.
