Wedding of the Waters is a scenic and storied spot on the river just south of Thermopolis, Wyoming — the very place where the Wind River, after carving its dramatic way through Wind River Canyon, officially becomes the Bighorn River. Marked by a simple roadside sign and plaque, this geographic curiosity (one river becoming another) sits at the mouth of a spectacular canyon and anchors one of Wyoming's most celebrated fishing and floating stretches.

For anglers, this is hallowed water. The Bighorn River below the Wedding of the Waters is a nationally famous blue-ribbon trout fishery, full of healthy rainbow, brown, and cutthroat trout, and the float from here downstream toward Kirby and Worland is a bucket-list trip for fly fishers. A boat ramp here — including one of the nation's first wheelchair-accessible riverine ramps — provides drift-boat and raft access to the river.

The spot also serves as the takeout for the thrilling whitewater run through Wind River Canyon just upstream, where the river surges between towering walls of rock more than three billion years old. Local outfitters (operating under permit with the Wind River Reservation tribes, who manage the canyon) offer guided fishing floats and whitewater trips.

Whether you're launching a float, fishing the legendary water, or simply pulling over to read the plaque and admire the canyon mouth, it's a memorable stop. Bring a Wyoming fishing license if you plan to cast, watch the river levels and current, wear a life jacket on the water, and pack out everything. For fishing, floating, and a dose of Western geography, the Wedding of the Waters is a Thermopolis-area gem.
