Weir Creek Hot Springs is a pristine, free natural soak tucked into the cedar forest of the Clearwater National Forest along Idaho's wild Lochsa River corridor — one of the loveliest of the many hot springs that dot scenic U.S. Highway 12 between Kooskia and Lolo Pass. A short hike through old-growth cedars leads to a cluster of rock pools steaming above a rushing creek, a perfect reward for road-trippers and backcountry soakers alike.

The hot springs sit just a half-mile up the trail from a highway pullout (around milepost 142), climbing a couple hundred feet along a narrow, scenic ridge above Weir Creek — an easy 15-to-20-minute walk, though the path is rocky and a bit airy in spots, so step carefully. At the top, three or four volunteer-built rock pools fed by a roughly 118-degree source mix with cool air and creek mist; the main upper pool, perched on a cliff ledge with a lovely view, sits around a comfortable 105 degrees and seats up to ten.

It's free, with no permit or fee, though a few rules keep it nice: overnight use of the springs isn't allowed between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m., and the small pullout only fits eight to ten cars, so arrive early to snag a spot. There's no developed camping at the springs themselves.

The soak is wonderful year-round — magical in falling snow — though the trail can be icy in winter and spring runoff may briefly affect the lowest pools. Bring a towel, a headlamp if you'll be out near dusk, water shoes for the rocky path, and your best leave-no-trace manners, and pack out everything. Clean, scenic, and blissfully wild, Weir Creek is a quintessential Idaho roadside soak.
