Disc Golf
Bandemer Park is a 38-acre natural area strung along the Huron River on the north side of Ann Arbor, Michigan, and its wooded disc golf course is one of the most pleasant urban rounds in the state. Built in 2007, the course winds through the trees between the paved Border-to-Border trail and the unpaved river trail, which means you're throwing in genuine riverside woods while being minutes from downtown Ann Arbor. It's a small course with an outsized amount of character.
The layout is nine holes, but each hole has three tee pads, which effectively triples the course's variety and lets players tune the challenge to their skill or replay the round from a different angle. A typical trip takes about half an hour to an hour. The wooded setting is the defining feature: the trees demand controlled, shaped throws rather than raw power, and the river corridor keeps the whole round shaded and cool.
The park around it is genuinely good, too. Bandemer offers paved and unpaved trails through its main body, restrooms, benches, an accessible canoe dock, a fishing dock, a shelter, picnic areas and grills, which makes it easy to build a full afternoon around a round of disc. The Huron River frontage is the star, and the B2B trail running through connects it into Ann Arbor's wider trail network for cyclists and walkers.
Wildlife is a real part of the experience here. The park hosts a diverse mix common to the region: red fox, deer, squirrels and chipmunks, waterfowl along the river, toads, frogs, snakes, and a great variety of birds. It's a genuinely pleasant place to be even when the discs aren't flying.
Parking is available at two ends: a lot to the north off Barton Drive where it meets Whitmore Lake Road, and a south entrance off North Main Street at Lake Shore Drive. The course sits at roughly 42.3011 north, -83.7449 west, and it's free to play, as Ann Arbor's city courses are.
Spring through fall is the season, with fall colour along the Huron making October rounds especially good and Michigan winters shutting things down. The wooded, riverside setting means mosquitoes in summer and mud after rain, so bug spray and decent shoes are worth packing, along with a few spare discs, since trees and a river make for a hungry course. It's free, it's shaded, it's on the water, and it's ten minutes from downtown.
