Blacksburg Hole
Newport, Virginia
Swim
Blacksburg Hole is a well-loved local swimming spot on the banks of the ancient New River in southwestern Virginia — one of the oldest rivers in the world, cutting through the mountains near Blacksburg, Radford, and Newport. It has the feel of a well-kept secret, a summertime ritual passed among locals and Virginia Tech students alike.
This is an unofficial, undeveloped swimming area rather than a designated beach, so the appeal is the river itself: broad, green water with spots to swim, wade, and cool off on a hot day. The swimming is at its best from June through August, when water levels settle and temperatures are most inviting.
The New River country around it is rich with other water destinations, too — the likes of Foster Falls, Cascade Falls on Little Stony Creek, and the Falls of Dismal are all within a reasonable drive, making the area a swimming-hole road-tripper's dream.
There are no lifeguards or facilities here, so use good judgment: the New River can carry real current, especially after rain, so check conditions, watch depth before jumping, wear water shoes for the rocky bottom, keep a close eye on kids, and pack out everything you bring. Treat this local treasure with respect and it'll reward you with a classic Virginia river swim.
