Hike, Kayak, and Swim

Champlin Beach is a public park and swimming beach run by the Town of Urbana at the south end of Keuka Lake, one of New York's Finger Lakes. It sits on State Route 54 just east of the Village of Hammondsport, near the Hammondsport Fire Department, and the rental concession there uses the address 8533 State Route 54. The park is a long strip of mown lawn and shade trees along the shoreline, with picnic tables, charcoal grills, two pavilions the town rents out, a ball field behind it and a memorial to Hammondsport aviation pioneer Glenn Curtiss.

From the village square it is well under a mile to the beach, so plenty of people walk over. Drivers coming from Bath follow Route 54 north about eight miles to the head of the lake and turn into the park on the lake side of the highway, where there is a paved lot close to the water. The parking layout may change as town waterfront projects wrap up.

Swimming happens inside a small roped area off the lawn, and the town says lifeguards are on duty there during the summer months, starting in late June. Visitors describe the bottom as small stones and gravel with some weeds rather than soft sand, so water shoes help, and reviewers say the guarded area does not reach far from shore. Keuka is a deep, cold lake. The surface usually warms into the low to mid 70s Fahrenheit by late July and August but can feel bracing in June. There is no current, though boat and jet ski wakes roll in from the open lake on busy afternoons.

The town does not list any admission or parking charge for the beach. The only fees on its parks page are for boat launch permits ($40 for Urbana residents, $250 for non-residents), and the two pavilions are booked through the town clerk. Public restrooms are open only while lifeguards are on duty. During the Hammondsport Area Summer Recreation and Swimming Program, which runs for several weeks in July and early August, swimming lessons use the beach Monday through Thursday mornings and the beach stays closed to the public until 1:15 p.m. on those days. Outside the guarded season there is no lifeguard and you swim at your own risk.

New York awarded NY Forward money to replace the Champlin Beach pier, so expect fencing or closed sections near the pier while that work is underway. Keuka Lake also has occasional blue-green algae blooms; if the water near shore looks like green paint or pea soup, stay out and keep dogs out too.

Keuka Watersports rents kayaks, paddleboards and jet skis from the beach every day from mid-June through Labor Day, no reservation needed for kayaks and boards. Hikers can pick up the Triad Trail, an Eagle Scout project that climbs from Route 54 at 734 feet to Winding Stair Road at 1,192 feet and links the beach area to the Finger Lakes Trail. The town's other guarded swim spot, Depot Park on Water Street, is a short walk away in the village.
