Cayuga Lake State Park is a 141-acre park run by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation on the west shore near the north tip of Cayuga Lake, about 2.5 miles east of the village of Seneca Falls in Seneca County. The state took over the site in 1927. Before that it was Cayuga Lake Park, a lakeside stop for excursion steamers, and the bed of the old Geneva, Seneca Falls and Auburn trolley line still crosses the grounds. The guarded swim area sits in front of a strip of sand beach and lawn on the lower, lakeside half of the park.

The entrance is at 2632 Lower Lake Road (County Road 116), just off State Route 89. Route 89 cuts the park in two: the western half holds the non-electric campground loops, and the eastern half runs down to the water with the park office, the beach, picnic shelters, a playground and the boat launch. Day visitors park in the paved lots beside the beach and the park office, a short walk from the sand.

The swim area is a roped section of open lake off a sandy beach, with lifeguards on duty during the season. This end of Cayuga Lake is far shallower than the deep central basin, so the water near shore warms sooner in summer and the bottom shelves out gently, but the same shallows grow weeds and are prone to algae. The 2026 swim season ran from the third Saturday in June through Labor Day, daily from 10am to 6pm, with the park warning that swimming depends on lifeguard staffing and water testing and can be called off with little notice. Plan on swimming only inside the ropes while guards are on the stand. The beach and showers are listed as accessible.

Entry is not free in season. New York State Parks charges a vehicle use fee of $7 per car ($35 per bus), collected 9am to 5pm on weekends and holidays in late May and mid June, daily from late June through Labor Day, and on weekends and holidays into mid October. Outside those windows the gate is not staffed for fees, and the $80 annual Empire Pass covers the vehicle fee at most state parks. The boat launch has its own $7 fee from May through October. The park is open year-round from dawn to dusk, and visitors who are not registered campers must be out by 10pm.

Harmful algal blooms are the main hazard. The park closed the beach to swimming during the 2026 season because of a bloom, and the New York State Department of Health counts Cayuga Lake among the waters with bloom-related beach closures in recent years. A posted closure stays in place until test results improve, which can take days. If the water looks green, scummy or like spilled paint, stay out and keep dogs out, and call the park at (315) 568-5163 before driving over.

Beyond the beach there are about 250 campsites, cabins with lake views, four reservable picnic pavilions, two playgrounds, playing fields, a nature trail and a launch for boats, canoes and kayaks. Anglers work the shallows for largemouth bass, bullheads and carp. In winter the park stays open for sledding, cross-country skiing and ice fishing, and in March the north end of the lake fills with migrating snow geese and ducks.
