Clear Lake Public Beach

Clear Lake Public Beach is a small county-owned swimming beach on the east shore of Clear Lake, inside the Town of Clear Lake in the far northeast corner of Steuben County, Indiana. The beach parcel at 90 Lakeside Court is listed in state parcel records as exempt county property, and the Steuben County Tourism Bureau counts Clear Lake among the county's six public beaches. Clear Lake itself is a natural glacial lake of roughly 800 acres with about six miles of shoreline, and nearly all of that shoreline is lined with cottages and year-round homes. This little patch of sand is one of the few places where someone without lake frontage can walk into the water.
From the town of Fremont, about five miles to the west, follow State Road 120 east toward the lake and then turn north into the lakeside streets on the east shore. The tourism bureau's directions run U.S. 20 east to Williams Street (State Road 827), north to State Road 120, then east to County Road 850 East. The beach sits down a short slope off Lake Drive near Outer Drive, a block from the general store and pizza place that make up the town's small commercial corner. There is no large dedicated lot, so look for posted parking signs and avoid blocking the narrow residential lanes or the private drives around the beach.
The swim area is a narrow strip of sand roughly 70 yards long facing west across the lake, which makes it a good spot for an evening swim with the sun going down over the water. Clear Lake lives up to its name, and on a calm day you can usually see the sandy bottom well out from shore. Close in it is shallow and easy for wading, but the basin drops off much deeper farther out (the lake averages around 31 feet and reaches about 107 feet at its deepest point), so weak swimmers should stay near the beach. Surface water usually warms enough for comfortable swimming from late June through August. No lifeguard is listed for this beach, so plan on swimming at your own risk and keeping a close eye on children.
No entry fee is listed by the county or the tourism bureau, and the beach is unstaffed, so it is free to use. No official hours are posted online either; treat it as a daytime spot and respect any signs at the site. Clear Lake is busy with powerboats, sailboats from the Clear Lake Yacht Club and the Clear Lake Ski Club's water ski practice in summer. Indiana law requires motorboats to run at idle speed within 200 feet of any shoreline, and state law bans wakeboarding and wake surfing from sunset to sunrise on all Indiana lakes, including this one. Even so, stay inside the shallow zone near the beach and do not swim out into the boat lanes.
A few other public spots sit within a short walk. The Clear Lake Township Land Conservancy keeps Old Town Hall Park, a shady lawn with picnic space just up the road from the beach that is open sunrise to sunset, and the Elizabeth Hanna Nature Preserve, which has a walking path off Outer Drive. A Department of Natural Resources public access site with a free concrete boat ramp is a short distance south along the shore for anyone bringing a kayak or small boat. Pokagon State Park and the larger beaches at Crooked Lake are about a 20 minute drive to the southwest if you want lifeguards and more facilities.
