Cockroach Cove — officially Halona Beach Cove, and famous on film as “Eternity Beach” from the movie From Here to Eternity — is a tiny, dramatic pocket of sand tucked into the rocky southeastern shore of Oahu, right beside the Halona Blowhole. Far from the crowds of Waikiki, this hidden gem rewards those who scramble down to it with turquoise water framed by black lava rock — a postcard-perfect little cove.

Reaching it is a short adventure: from the free Halona Blowhole Lookout parking area, a steep, rocky trail drops down to the sand. The path can be slippery, so wear proper footwear and watch your step.

This is a beautiful but potentially dangerous spot, so respect the ocean. For much of the year, swells roll straight into the cove, creating powerful surf and strong currents, and waves crash onto the slick rocks on either side. There are no lifeguards. Swimming is only advisable when the sea is genuinely calm — generally the summer months, roughly May through September — while winter often brings dangerous waves. Even on calm days, don't swim too far out, since currents can pull you toward the open ocean, and never turn your back on the surf.

When conditions are right, it's an idyllic spot for a dip, some snorkeling, and soaking up the scenery. Bring water, reef-safe sunscreen, and footwear for the rocks, check the surf report before you go, keep a close eye on children, and pack out everything.
