Coles Creek Beach

Coles Creek Beach is one of four public swim beaches the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers runs on Carlyle Lake, the 26,000-acre Kaskaskia River reservoir that is the largest man-made lake in Illinois. It sits inside the Coles Creek Day Use Area on the quieter east shore, in Clinton County between the hamlets of Shattuc, Boulder and Huey, about 10 km northeast of the city of Carlyle. It is a small beach, smaller than McNair and much smaller than Dam West across the lake, and it is the only beach on Carlyle Lake where dogs are allowed.
The posted address is 16225 Coles Creek Road, Carlyle, IL 62231. Coming from I-57, the Corps directions take Old U.S. 50 west about 19 miles through Salem, Odin and Sandoval, then north on Boulder Road (2400E) for roughly 4 miles, a jog east on 1700N, and back south on 2400E to the Coles Creek entrance. Parking lots sit right behind the sand and beside the boat ramp, so the walk from the car to the water is short. The day use area shares an entrance with Coles Creek Campground and the Lotus Group Area.
The swim area is a designated beach on open lake water. Carlyle Lake is broad and shallow, averaging about 11 feet deep with a 35-foot maximum, so it warms up quickly in summer, and a long fetch means wind can push real waves onto this shore on a breezy afternoon. Corps materials do not mention lifeguards here, so plan on swimming unsupervised and keep a close eye on kids. Dogs must stay on a leash no longer than six feet at all times, beach included. A shower house serves the beach during peak season, and the area also has flush toilets, drinking water and a playground.
Swimming is not free. The Corps charges a $5 per vehicle per day fee to use the beach, paid at an automated machine in the day use area that takes only debit or credit cards (no cash). The same $5 also covers the boat ramp, and total day use fees are capped at $5 per vehicle per day. The fee does not apply to children under 16 or to campers registered at a Corps campground, and a $40 Corps annual day use pass is sold for repeat visitors. Shelter hours in the day use area are 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
The beach is seasonal. The Corps closes the Carlyle Lake public beaches, Coles Creek included, in mid-September, and the adjoining campground runs only from May 1 to late September, with the recreation season centered on Memorial Day through Labor Day. Showers are only open in peak season. Call the Carlyle Lake Project Office at (618) 594-2484 before an early or late season trip to confirm the beach is open and the water is in good shape.
Coles Creek Campground next door has 119 electric sites, most on or near the shoreline, plus reservable group areas, and the day use area has a boat ramp with a courtesy dock, a fish cleaning station and a group picnic shelter for up to 75 people that rents for $30 a day from May through September. Fishing for crappie, white bass, catfish and walleye is popular from shore and boat, and the Carlyle Lake Visitor Center at Dam West has exhibits and lake information.
