Camp, Hike, and Swim

Dam West Beach is the main public swimming beach on Carlyle Lake, the 26,000-acre reservoir the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built on the Kaskaskia River in 1967. It sits inside the Corps' Dam West Recreation Area at the southwest corner of the lake, about 2 km northeast of downtown Carlyle in Clinton County, Illinois. Carlyle Lake is the largest man-made lake in Illinois, and the Corps runs four swim beaches on it: Dam West, McNair, Keyesport and Coles Creek. Dam West is the largest of the four and the one on the town side of the dam.

From Interstate 70, take Illinois Route 127 south to Carlyle, turn east on William Road, and follow it as it becomes Lake Road. The Dam West day use area is on the left. Paved lots sit right behind the sand and along the picnic grounds, so the walk to the water is short. The Carlyle Lake Visitor Center is in the same recreation area, and town is a few minutes away.

The beach is a long, narrow strip of sand on the open lake, set in front of a shaded picnic area with restrooms, picnic tables, playgrounds and two reservable shelters. The water is the main body of the lake, not a separate pond, so wind and boat wakes reach it, and on breezy days the waves can be real. Carlyle Lake is a flood-control reservoir, which means its level rises after heavy rain upstream and falls again as the Corps releases water through the dam. The width of the beach and the depth off the sand change with it. The Corps pages describe the beach without mentioning lifeguards, so plan on swimming without one and keep children within reach.

Swimming is not free. The Corps charges a $5 per vehicle day use fee at the Dam West, McNair, Keyesport and Coles Creek beaches, and total day use fees, beach and boat ramp combined, are capped at $5 per vehicle per day. Children under 16 do not pay, and neither do campers registered at a Corps campground or holders of an America the Beautiful pass. Pay at the automated fee machine in the day use area. The machines take debit and credit cards only. A Corps annual day use pass is $40. Day use hours are 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. The Corps also waives beach and ramp fees on a few days each year, including its June 16 birthday and Juneteenth.

Pets have to stay on a leash no longer than six feet. Coles Creek, on the east shore, is the only Carlyle Lake beach that allows dogs, so leave them out of the swim area at Dam West. Conditions on a lake this size can change quickly with storms, and the Corps posts closures and status changes for its beaches and ramps on the Corps Lakes Gateway status page. Check it, or call the project office at (618) 594-2484, after a stretch of high water.

Dam West Campground sits right next to the beach, with sites close enough to walk down to the water. There is a boat ramp with courtesy docks, fish cleaning stations and a marina nearby. The Willow Pond Nature Trail starts by the Visitor Center, and the Little Prairie Nature Trail is in the Dam West Spillway area below the dam. A paved walking and biking path crosses the dam to the Dam East and McNair areas. The Visitor Center has a 215-gallon native fish aquarium and is open on spring and fall weekends and daily from late May to early September.
