Cove Road Beach is a 1.25-acre county park on the lower Nanticoke River at the end of Cove Road in Bivalve, on the western edge of Wicomico County, Maryland. Wicomico County Recreation, Parks and Tourism owns and runs it, and part of the money to build it came through Maryland's Program Open Space grants. It sits roughly 15 miles west of Salisbury, beside a small inlet the maps call Ragged Point Cove, with tidal marsh on either side and the wide, brackish river opening up to the west toward Tangier Sound.
From Salisbury, head west on MD 349 (Nanticoke Road) toward Bivalve and follow Cove Road to its end at the water. The lot is small, with room for only a handful of cars and nothing for trailers, and the county warns that it fills early on summer days. A short ramp and a few steps lead from the parking area down to the sand. The county lists the park address simply as Cove Road, Bivalve, MD 21814, and the park is open from sunrise to sunset.
The beach is a long, narrow strip of sand separated from the parking lot by a band of tall grass. The water off it is calm and shallow for a good distance out, which is why the county pitches it as a spot for small children and sunbathers. This is tidal river water, so the edge of the beach moves with the tide, and at an unusually high tide much of the sand can go under. The river here is brackish and warms up through the summer; the county does not publish depth or bottom details, so wade in and check footing before letting kids range out. No lifeguards are listed for this park, so you swim at your own risk. The county has restored the shoreline here to deal with erosion that had been eating away the beach.
There is no entry or parking fee. Grills and fires are not allowed on the sand itself, but there is a grill and shaded picnic tables next to the beach. The county page does not list restrooms. The Wicomico County Health Department samples the water at Cove Road Beach during the swim season, and it has issued bacteria advisories and full closures here several times over the years, usually after long stretches of heavy rain. The standing advice is to stay out of the water for a couple of days after a big storm, avoid murky or bad-smelling water, and keep open cuts out of the river. Check the county health department or call Environmental Health at 410-546-4446 before a visit after rain.
The cove is also a good place to fish and crab, especially early in the morning or toward evening, and the beach works as a soft launch for kayaks and canoes heading out onto the Nanticoke. The county has bought land next to the park and has drafted a plan to join the new parcel to the existing beach, so expect changes to the layout in coming years. If Cove Road is closed for bacteria, Roaring Point Park in nearby Nanticoke is the other county beach on this stretch of river.
