Elmore State Park Beach is the swimming beach of Elmore State Park, a Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation property at the north end of Lake Elmore in the town of Elmore, Lamoille County. The lake covers about 219 acres and sits right under Elmore Mountain (2,608 feet), which rises almost from the western shore. The park began in the 1930s when the town and local residents gave the state 30 lakeside acres, and Civilian Conservation Corps crews built the access road, the beach and the beach house between 1934 and 1936, work that put the park on the National Register of Historic Places.
The park entrance is at 856 VT Route 12, about 5 miles southeast of Morrisville and a short walk from the Lake Elmore village center with its general store and town hall. From Montpelier, take I-89 exit 8 and follow VT 12 north to Lake Elmore; the park sign is on the left. From Burlington, leave I-89 at exit 10 and take VT 100 north to VT 12. Beach Road runs west from VT 12 to the day-use area, where parking sits just north of the beach house and a short walk from the sand.
The beach is a long strip of sand facing south down the lake, with a buoyed swimming area off the shoreline. The north end of Lake Elmore is very shallow with a gradual slope, so the water stays wading depth a good way out. The whole lake is shallow by Vermont standards, about 18 feet at its deepest according to Vermont Fish and Wildlife, and there is no current. There are no lifeguards: Vermont State Parks staffs a lifeguard only at the Button Bay pool. Park staff test the swim area weekly for E. coli and blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) during the operating season, with results posted on the state's recreational water status page, and the beach can be closed when a test fails.
Day use costs $5 for adults 14 and older and $2 for children 4 to 13; children 3 and under get in free. A $40 individual season pass or a $105 vehicle pass covers every Vermont state park, and Vermont residents who are 62 or older or honorably discharged veterans can get the lifetime Green Mountain Passport for $2 at their town clerk's office. Day-use hours are 10am to official sunset, and the season runs from the Friday of Memorial Day weekend through the second Monday in October. The park phone is 802-888-2982.
Pets are not allowed on the beach at any time, though they are welcome in the campground and on the trails. Motorboats use the lake (the state boat ramp is at the south end), so stay inside the swim area. Milfoil has been a recurring problem in Lake Elmore, and local fundraisers pay for its removal each year. The state warns that concessions and boat rentals can be delayed or unavailable, so call ahead if you want a rental.
The beach house has restrooms, changing rooms, a concession stand and a lakeview function room. Canoes, kayaks, pedal boats, rowboats and stand-up paddleboards rent there by the hour, and cartop boats can be carried down to the water. The campground just north of the beach has 44 tent and RV sites and 15 lean-tos. The Fire Tower Trail climbs about 1.5 miles to the summit of Elmore Mountain and a 1939 fire tower, and the Ridge Trail links with it for a 3.7 mile loop. The park lists the tower as closed for safety work through October 30, with the trails open.
