Camp, Canoe, Hike, Kayak, and Swim

Swimming here happens at one place only, the beach in the Quaker Race Day Use Area on the west side of Pinchot Lake, and it runs on a short season. The beach is open from late May to mid-September, 8:00 A.M. to sunset, and it is closed outside that window. No other part of the lake is a sanctioned swimming area at any time of year. Even inside the season the beach closes without much warning. Pennsylvania DCNR samples the water through the summer, and elevated E. coli counts and harmful algal blooms have shut the swimming area down repeatedly in recent years, in one case for the remainder of the season. Boating and fishing generally carry on during those closures. Check the park page or call the office at 717-432-5011 before you make the drive.

Pinchot Lake is not a natural body of water. The Commonwealth broke ground in May 1958, dammed Beaver Creek, and opened the park to the public on 26 May 1961, putting 340 acres of water over what had been tired farmland. That origin is the whole story of what the swimming feels like. This is a shallow warm-water impoundment rather than a spring-fed pool, so by July the water at the beach is genuinely warm and the bottom underfoot is soft. The entry is a gradual sand slope out to the buoy line with no drop-off, which is easy going for small children and uninteresting for anyone hoping to dive. Visibility is limited. The same warmth and nutrient load that make it pleasant in August are what feed the algae trouble.

Getting in costs nothing. Pennsylvania does not charge admission at its state parks and there is no parking fee at Quaker Race, so unless you rent a boat the day is free. The park sits in northern York County along PA 177 between Rossville and Lewisberry, roughly midway between Harrisburg and York. Coming down from Harrisburg, take I-83 to the Lewisberry exit (35) and follow PA 177 south. From the York side you can use the Newberrytown exit (32) and run PA 382 west to PA 177 south. The GPS address is 2200 Rosstown Road, Lewisberry.

Quaker Race has several parking lots, modern restrooms, drinking water, picnic tables with charcoal grills, a snack bar, a children's play area, horseshoe pits and a volleyball court. The beach is large and ADA accessible, and a two-plug electric vehicle charging station sits near the beach concession. Smoking is prohibited on the beach and in the swimming area, with designated spots just off it.

There is plenty to fill the rest of a day. Only electric motors are permitted on Pinchot Lake and everything runs at no-wake speed, so the water stays quiet. The concession beside the beach rents canoes, one and two person kayaks, paddleboats and rowboats daily from Memorial Day to Labor Day, and the park rents 286 shoreline mooring and canoe rack spaces between 1 April and 1 October. Three launch areas are open around the clock. The lake carries a Big Bass Lake designation with its own size and creel limits, and holds largemouth bass, hybrid striped bass, muskellunge, walleye, crappie, catfish, carp and sunfish. Anglers go out on natural ice in winter, though the park does not monitor thickness and says so plainly. Trails wind past the diabase boulder fields that give this corner of York County its lumpy character, there is an Environmental Learning Center near the lake, and the campground takes tents and trailers alongside yurts and cabins booked through 888-PA-PARKS. The park gates are open every day of the year, 8:00 A.M. to sunset.
