Quaker Race Beach at Gifford Pinchot State Park
Wellsville
Camp, Canoe, Hike, Kayak, and Swim
Quaker Race Beach is the public swim beach at Gifford Pinchot State Park, a 2,338-acre Pennsylvania state park in northern York County strung along PA 177 between Rossville and Lewisberry. The beach faces the north shore of Pinchot Lake, a 340-acre reservoir on Beaver Creek that runs roughly three miles from its upper end down to the dam. A curving line of buoys marks off the swimming water from a wide sand apron, with the Lake View picnic pavilion at the southwest end of the day use area and the Woodland pavilion up the shore to the northeast.
The park has two beaches, and only one of them is open to everybody. DCNR names the Quaker Race beach as the park's swimming area. The second beach sits inside the campground on the southwest arm of the lake and is a designated swimming area for registered overnight guests, so anyone driving in for the day wants the Quaker Race Day Use Area entrance and not the campground entrance.
The season runs from late May to mid September, 8:00 A.M. to sunset, the same hours the rest of the park keeps. No lifeguards are posted. DCNR's own wording is swim at your own risk, and the rules posted at the beach apply. The beach is ADA accessible, floating wheelchairs can be requested at either beach, and ADA parking sits next to the beach shower house. Two, two-plug electric vehicle charging stations are installed beside those spaces and are meant for charging rather than all-day parking.
Nothing costs money to get in. Pennsylvania charges no entrance fee and no beach fee, and the big paved lot behind the beach is free. A food concession runs seasonally, and the boat rental works out of the Conewago Day Use Area across the lake with canoes, kayaks, paddleboats and rowboats, daily from Memorial Day to Labor Day. An ADA accessible playground, picnic tables, charcoal grills, modern restrooms, drinking water, a volleyball court and the hilly Quaker's Challenge disc golf course are all within walking distance of the sand. Four picnic pavilions can be reserved up to 11 months out for a fee, and unreserved ones are free first come, first served.
The hazard worth planning around here is water quality. Quaker Race Beach closes to swimming on bacteria results, sometimes more than once in a season, and it has happened in consecutive summers: an E. coli closure at the start of July 2026, a second one in mid August 2026, and a September 2024 shutdown that took both the Quaker Race and campground swim areas out for the rest of that year over E. coli and harmful algae. Park staff put it down to hot weather, resident geese and a lake with very little through-flow. Boating, paddling and fishing stay open during those closures. Check the park website or call the park office at 717-432-5011 before loading the car. Diabase boulders and rock outcrops run all through the park and out into the shallows in places, so watch your footing off the groomed sand. Pets are barred from swimming areas, alcohol is prohibited parkwide, and smoking is not allowed on the beach or in the water.
The lake is restricted to electric motors at slow, no-wake speed, which keeps anything fast well away from the buoy line, and three launch areas are open around the clock. The campground is one of the largest in the state system at 309 sites, open mid-April through late October, with a base modern site running 16 dollars a night for Pennsylvania residents and 21 dollars for non-residents, plus 4 dollars for shower-house access, 7 dollars for electric, 14 dollars for water and sewer, and a 6.50 dollar transaction fee per site. Pinchot Lake is a Fish and Boat Commission Big Bass water, and ice thickness is never monitored in winter.
