Granville Gorge is a magical little slice of the southern Berkshire Hills — a lush, green gorge where the Hubbard River carves a series of mini waterfalls and clear swimming holes through the forest near Granville, Massachusetts, close to the Connecticut line. Tucked in and around Granville State Forest, it's a refreshing, off-the-beaten-path escape for swimmers, hikers, and mountain bikers alike.

The Hubbard River is the heart of it. The river drops some 450 feet over a couple of miles, forming a beautiful staircase of pools, chutes, and small waterfalls as it spills over the rocks. In places the water runs shallow enough to wade and explore; in others it deepens into pools perfect for a cool swim, with little cascades pouring in. It's a gorgeous, leafy spot that feels worlds away from anywhere.

There's more to do than swim. Granville State Forest laces the area with trails for hiking and mountain biking (as well as horseback riding and, in winter, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing), including a multi-mile trail that runs along both sides of the river. A peaceful forest campground offers a tranquil, remote-feeling overnight for those who want to stay.

A free parking area inside the forest (off West Hartland Road) makes a good starting point for exploring up the river. Summer is the prime swimming season, while spring brings the fullest, most dramatic flows. Wear sturdy footwear with good grip for the slick rocks, always check the depth before jumping or sliding, watch the current after rain, and pack out everything you carry in. Scenic, shady, and refreshingly uncrowded, Granville Gorge is one of western Massachusetts' loveliest natural playgrounds.
