Lake Delton Public Beach is a small municipal swim beach run by the Village of Lake Delton on Lake Delton, the 249-acre reservoir that sits between the village's resort strip and Wisconsin Dells. The park covers about 0.6 acres at East Hiawatha Drive and Park Drive, and the village's 2025-2030 outdoor recreation plan describes it as the only public beach on the lake. Everything else along this shoreline belongs to resorts, condos and private homes, including Wilderness on the Lake right next door, so this is the one place on Lake Delton where anyone can walk onto the sand and swim without being a paying guest somewhere.
The beach is reached from East Hiawatha Drive by turning onto Park Drive. A small off-street lot sits at the back of the park, a few steps from the sand. It is not a big lot, so arriving early on summer weekends is a reasonable plan. Downtown Wisconsin Dells is about 2 miles north. The village lists no admission or parking charge for the beach; the only park fees in the municipal code are for groups that reserve a site for exclusive use.
The swim area is a narrow strip of sand facing southeast onto the lake. The water directly off it is a designated public swimming area, set by village ordinance as the Park Drive Public Beach restricted area, and boats are barred from bathing areas once they are buoyed. Lake Delton is shallow for its size, averaging about 12 feet deep with a maximum near 16 feet, so the water warms up through June and July, though the village does not publish water temperatures. The beach is open daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. from mid-May to mid-September. There is no lifeguard on duty and the posted rule is swim at your own risk. Dogs are not allowed (service animals excepted), glass is prohibited, and smoking is banned in village parks.
Lake Delton is a heavily used boating lake, and the village's own water-use ordinance calls it highly congested. Expect heavy powerboat, pontoon and personal watercraft traffic just offshore on summer weekends, and keep kids close to the beach. The recreation plan flags a storm sewer outfall at the beach as a safety and erosion concern, so it is sensible to stay away from it and to skip swimming for a day or so after heavy rain. A fence separates the public beach from the neighboring private property; stay on the village side.
The lake itself has an unusual history. It was dammed on Dell Creek in 1927 purely as a recreation lake, and in June 2008 flooding cut a new channel beside County Highway A and emptied the lake into the Wisconsin River, leaving the beach facing a mud flat studded with old tree stumps. The breach was repaired and the lake refilled in April 2009. Today the park has a sand beach, public restrooms and changing rooms, drinking water, picnic tables and charcoal grills, but no covered shelter, so bring shade on hot afternoons. Village parks close from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.
