Lake Norman State Park Swim Beach
Troutman
Camp, Canoe, Hike, Kayak, and Swim
The swim beach at Lake Norman State Park is a sandy, roped-off swimming area on the northern shore of Lake Norman, run by the North Carolina Division of Parks and Recreation. Lake Norman is the Catawba River reservoir that Duke Power filled in the early 1960s behind Cowans Ford Dam, and it is the largest manmade lake in the state. The park holds about 17 miles of its shoreline in southern Iredell County, roughly 8 km southwest of downtown Troutman and 16 km south of Statesville. For years this beach was the only place on the entire lake where the general public could legally swim.
The park's main entrance is at 759 State Park Road in Troutman, a short drive from I-77 exit 42 by way of Troutman; brown state park signs lead the rest of the way. Inside the park, follow the main road south past the picnic area to the swim beach access, where several paved lots sit just above the bathhouse. A short walk downhill puts you on the sand. The same parking area is the trailhead for the Lake Shore Trail, so on summer weekends you share the lots with hikers.
The beach is about 125 yards long, with a buoyed swim area off the sand and a bathhouse just behind it (the swim pass covers bathhouse use). A seasonal concession stand sits nearby. This is open reservoir water, so expect a sandy bottom near shore that drops off as you wade out, murky water with little visibility, and water that warms up considerably by July and August. Lifeguards staff the beach during the summer season, roughly from late May through Labor Day. Pets are not allowed on the swim beach.
Entry to Lake Norman State Park is free, but a state swim pass is required at this beach: $6 per day for visitors 13 and older and $4 per day for children 3 to 12, with weekly passes at $20 and $16 and a group rate of $3 per person for groups larger than 15. The statewide NC State Parks Annual Pass ($100 starting with 2026 passes) covers six swim passes per day. Day-use gates are open 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. from May through August and 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. in September; the bathhouse and lifeguards keep shorter, seasonal hours, so call the visitor center at 704-528-6350 before a shoulder-season trip.
Swim only inside the buoyed area while guards are on duty. Lake Norman is a busy powerboat lake, and the shoreline away from the beach is rocky with sudden drop-offs. In July 2016 three people drowned after one person slipped off rocks at the tip of a park peninsula and others went in to help. That spot was not the beach, and the lesson is plain: get in the water only at the designated swim area. If guards are short-staffed on a given day, the beach may stay open as swim-at-your-own-risk, as park staff described in 2021.
The rest of the park is worth a full day. Park Lake, a smaller lake held back by a low dam near the visitor center, has canoe, kayak, pedal boat and paddleboard rentals at $10 an hour in season. The Itusi Trail offers about 31 miles of mountain bike singletrack, the Lake Shore and Alder trails follow the water on foot, and the campground has tent and RV sites plus camper cabins. A free public boat ramp gives access to the main lake.
