Hike and Swim

North Beach Park is a seven-acre Ottawa County Parks and Recreation property on the east shore of Lake Michigan, a short distance north of the Grand Haven harbor channel. The official address is 18775 North Shore Drive in Ferrysburg, though many maps and mailing addresses put it in Spring Lake. The park holds 745 feet of public sand beach with private lakefront homes on both sides, and it backs onto the wooded dunes of the county's North Ottawa Dunes property.

From US-31, take the Ferrysburg exit and head west on 3rd Street to North Shore Drive, then follow North Shore Drive west for roughly two miles to the park entrance. Parking is in a paved lot just behind the dune, and a walkway leads from the lot over the low foredune to the sand. The Idema Explorers Trail's North Shore Connector bike path runs along North Shore Drive, so you can also reach the park by bike from Ferrysburg or Grand Haven.

The swim area is open Lake Michigan surf over a sandy bottom that slopes gradually from the shore. Water is cold early in the season and usually warms to the upper 60s or low 70s (F) by late July and August, though a shift in wind can pull colder water to the surface within a day. The county lists the beach as a swimming beach with no lifeguards, so you swim at your own risk. On windy days, especially with a west or southwest wind, Lake Michigan builds waves and rip currents along this shoreline, and the pier currents near the Grand Haven channel to the south are a known danger. Check the forecast and stay out when the waves are up.

Entry is free, but a county motor vehicle permit is required to park from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. A daily permit costs $8 and an annual permit $25, with discounted annual permits for Ottawa County residents bought online or at the county parks office. Pay stations in the lot sell daily and annual permits tied to your license plate, and unpaid vehicles are ticketed. Outside that season parking is free. Park hours are 7am to 10pm from March 1 through October 15 and 7am to 8pm from October 16 through the end of February. Dogs are not allowed in the park from May 1 through September 30.

Ottawa County's health department samples the water during the summer. In July 2023 the park was placed under a no-body-contact advisory after high E. coli counts that officials linked to dredging near the harbor. The advisory was lifted two days later, though a later sample came in just over the state limit before the dredging work ended. If a sign is posted at the entrance or the county has an advisory out, stay out of the water, and avoid swimming after heavy rain.

Beyond the beach, the park has a reservable picnic shelter, a playground, a sand volleyball court, grills and picnic tables, seasonal vending machines and modern restrooms that close for winter. A seasonal barrier-free walkway runs out onto the sand and the county keeps a beach wheelchair on site. A wooden stairway climbs the dune behind the beach to an overlook deck with a long view up and down the shoreline, and trails continue into North Ottawa Dunes for a longer hike. The county also runs a live sunset camera from the park.
