The Old Dam Rope Swing is a classic summer swimming spot on the river near Emmett, Idaho — a well-loved rope swing that sends jumpers soaring out over a deep pool below an old diversion dam. Easy to reach and right off the road, it's the kind of low-key, hometown swimming hole that southwestern Idaho does so well.
The rope hangs from above the water and swings out a good distance — roughly 15 feet over the river, and with a strong running start you can stretch that to a thrilling 25 feet or so before letting go. The rope usually dangles out over the current, so you'll often need a stick or pole to snag it and pull it back to the launch spot. Once you splash down, there's a place to climb out just downstream.
A few safety notes worth taking seriously. River conditions change with the season, so always check the water depth and look for submerged rocks or debris before you swing, and let the rope and hardware get a good look too. Depending on how fast the river is running, you may have to swim hard to reach the exit, so this spot is best for strong, confident swimmers — and never a good idea alone. When the water is high or moving fast, sit it out.
Summer is prime time, when the water's warmer and the flow has settled from spring runoff. Bring water shoes for the rocky banks, keep an eye on the current, pack out your trash, and the Old Dam Rope Swing will reward you with a simple, splashy slice of Idaho summer fun.
