Oscoda Beach Park (the township calls it Oscoda Township Beach Park) is a 9.6-acre public park run by Oscoda Charter Township in Iosco County, on the Lake Huron shore of northeast Michigan. It has roughly 1,000 feet of sandy frontage on the open lake, sits at the east end of River Road a few blocks from the US-23 business strip in downtown Oscoda, and is the town's main swimming beach. The AuSable River empties into Lake Huron a little under a mile to the south.
Getting there is simple. From US-23 in downtown Oscoda, turn east on River Road and follow it to the lake; the park fills the blocks between the street grid and the shoreline. Because it is only about three blocks from the shops and restaurants, plenty of people walk over from town. The township page does not list a parking fee.
The swim area is the open Lake Huron beach in front of the boardwalk. The bottom is sand and drops off very gradually, so the water stays shallow for a long way out, which is why families like it. There are no lifeguards and no roped or designated swimming area, according to the Oscoda Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, so you swim at your own risk and children need an adult watching. Lake Huron is cold. Even in July and August the water near shore often sits in the 60s Fahrenheit, and an east wind or upwelling can drop it much lower overnight. A long pier runs out into the lake from the north end of the beach, and the town launches its Fourth of July fireworks from it.
Oscoda Township does not post an admission or day-use fee for the beach park on its parks page; the only fees it lists are for its boat launches elsewhere in the township. Entry to the beach is free. The township page gives no posted hours either, so check the signs at the entrance if you plan to come early or late. The restrooms in the bathhouse are seasonal.
There are a few hazards to know about. Waves on Lake Huron build quickly with an east or northeast wind, and currents can run along the pier, so stay well away from it when the surf is up. Oscoda also has a long history of PFAS contamination from the former Wurtsmith Air Force Base, and white foam that washes up on Lake Huron beaches here has tested high for PFAS in community sampling. State health officials advise avoiding contact with the foam and rinsing off if you touch it; swimming in the water itself is not restricted. Michigan beaches are sampled for E. coli during the summer, and any closure or advisory is posted on the state's BeachGuard system.
Away from the water, the park has an accessible bathhouse with restrooms, an accessible pavilion, a boardwalk and sunbathing deck, a splash pad, a playground, a skate park, a basketball court, a wooden band shell, picnic tables and charcoal grills. In summer the band shell hosts free Thursday concerts and there are free Wednesday movie nights, and the Art on the Beach arts and crafts show takes over the park each year. The park also contains the Dock Reserve, the site of a lumber-era dock that predates the fire of 1911 that burned Oscoda.
