Peoples Creek Recreation Area is an Army Corps of Engineers day use area and campground on Wappapello Lake, off Route T in Wayne County, a couple of miles north of Wappapello Dam and about fifteen miles north of Poplar Bluff. The Corps keeps three maintained sand beaches here, at Peoples Creek, Redman Creek and Rockwood Point. The Peoples Creek one sits in a cove a short walk northwest of the two-lane boat ramp, with its own parking off People's Creek Road.

The sand runs a little over two hundred yards along the shoreline, curving with the cove and facing open water to the west. Behind it the Corps has put in a large bathhouse, a foot wash station, picnic tables, grills, a volleyball area and parking. Shade sits back off the sand rather than over it, so the lightly wooded shoreline does the work in the afternoon. The group picnic shelter here, listed as shelter number 7, runs April 17 through September 28.

There is a fee to use the beach or the ramp. The Corps charges 2 dollars a day for anyone 16 or older, or up to 5 dollars per vehicle per day, and registered campers and holders of a valid annual day pass do not pay it again. The pass is sold online through Recreation.gov as the Peoples Creek Day Use Pass, first come first served, good only for the date and vehicle printed on it, with no advance booking. Cell coverage is patchy around parts of the lake, so buy and download it before you turn off the highway. The group shelter is the one thing here that takes a real reservation, at 50 dollars.

When the beaches are open the hours are dawn to dusk. The Corps opens them in mid April and closes them in mid to late September, and it says outright that the dates depend on the lake level. For 2026 the recreation area is staffed from May 6 through September 28, with the fee booth reachable at (573) 222-8234; outside that window general questions go to (573) 778-5404. There are no lifeguards at any Wappapello beach. The Corps asks swimmers to use the buddy system, wear a life jacket, and keep a responsible adult watching the kids.

Two hazards are worth knowing. Wappapello is a flood control reservoir on the St. Francis River, finished in 1941, and flood storage still comes first. The pool swings, high water routinely covers the sand and closes the lower campground, and the Corps warns that even reserved day use shelters get cancelled when the area floods. Check the lake level first. The other is boat traffic. The beach sits between the ramp with its courtesy dock and a large sandy mooring area where lower loop campers pull boats up on shore, so you are sharing a working cove, not a closed-off swim basin.

The campground has 57 sites. The lower loop holds 38 with 50 amp electric and water, and it is the only waterfront camping on the lake. The upper loop has 19 full service sites with sewer added. Rates run 16 dollars for walk-in tent sites, 24 dollars for limited service and 28 dollars for full service. Lower is open mid April into late September; upper stays open all year. Check out is 4 p.m. and the stay limit is 14 nights in any rolling 30. Water containers and sprinklers for recreation are not permitted, and the Corps asks you not to haul firewood in from somewhere else.

Away from the sand there is the Lake View Trail out of the campground, an accessible fishing pier, and the Pine Ridge Nature Trail a few minutes south at Redman Creek. Mingo National Wildlife Refuge is roughly 11 miles away. The lake itself covers 8,400 acres inside 45,000 acres of public land.
