Rock Climb

Revenue Flats is one of the premier rock climbing destinations in southwestern Montana, a sprawling BLM area of rock outcrops and open sage country between the communities of Norris and McAllister in Madison County, roughly 36 miles southwest of Bozeman and 18 miles north of Ennis. It has become a genuine hub for Bozeman-area climbers, offering bouldering, sport and trad in one place, free dispersed camping, and long views across to the Tobacco Root Mountains.

Climbers should know the rock before they pack: most of the climbing here is on quality gneiss rather than granite, and it climbs beautifully. The area holds 13 or more single-pitch sport and trad routes averaging around 30 to 40 feet, concentrated in three named zones, the Aquarium, the Nuggets and the Wafers. Bouldering is abundant throughout, and the mix means a party with different interests can spread out across a single day. The Fishbowl is the exception on rock type, a sheltered granite amphitheatre that doubles as a superb campsite.

That camping is a big part of the appeal. Revenue Flats functions as a BLM camping area with dispersed sites among the rocks, which makes a climbing weekend simple and cheap, and the Fishbowl in particular is a sought-after spot to pitch a tent. Beyond climbing, the area draws mountain bikers, hikers and rock hounds, so it works as a general basecamp rather than a single-purpose crag.

Access is the practical hurdle. A rocky gravel road climbs roughly five miles to reach the area, and high-clearance vehicles are strongly recommended, which is worth knowing before committing a low-slung car to the drive. Once there, it's genuinely remote country with no services and unreliable cell coverage.

Season runs roughly spring through fall. The open, treeless character that gives Revenue Flats its big views also means sun and wind with little shelter, so summer days get hot and exposed while spring and fall are often perfect. Montana weather can turn quickly at any time of year.

Come self-sufficient: plenty of water, since there's none on site, sun protection, wind layers, a pad and rack or crash pads depending on your plans, and a guidebook or Mountain Project beta for the zones. Pack out everything, including waste, since dispersed camping only stays open when people treat it well. For short, high-quality gneiss routes and boulders with the Tobacco Roots on the horizon and a free campsite in a granite amphitheatre, Revenue Flats is a Montana classic.
