Snively Hot Springs is a wild, undeveloped soak right on the bank of the Owyhee River in the high desert of eastern Oregon, about 19 miles from Nyssa. Managed by the Bureau of Land Management as a day-use recreation site, it's a wonderfully scenic and easy-to-reach place to soak — you can drive nearly to the water and walk a short way to the pools — yet it still feels far from the crowds, tucked into the rugged Owyhee canyon country.

What makes Snively special (and a little tricky) is how it works. Scalding spring water — emerging at up to about 190°F — flows down to meet the cold Owyhee River, and soakers use riverside rocks to build and adjust pools that blend the two. The result is a large soaking area where the temperature varies from spot to spot: the pools shift with the river level and how the rocks are arranged, so you move around to find the temperature that feels best.

Respect the heat — it can burn. The source water is hot enough to scald, so test carefully before getting in, keep well back from where the undiluted spring emerges, and watch children closely. Where the hot water mixes with the cold river it becomes a blissful soak, but that balance shifts constantly, so never assume a pool is a safe temperature without checking first.

The setting is a big part of the appeal. Snively sits in the dramatic Owyhee River canyon, a starkly beautiful stretch of sagebrush high desert, sheer rimrock, and quiet green water that feels a world away from anywhere. Wildlife is abundant — watch for deer, waterfowl, raptors overhead, and the occasional beaver working the river — and just upstream lies Lake Owyhee, the long reservoir behind Owyhee Dam, making the whole area a rewarding detour for anglers, paddlers, and hot-spring hunters alike. The roughly 19-mile drive out from Nyssa follows the river deeper into increasingly rugged and scenic country, so allow time to enjoy the journey as well as the soak.

A few practical notes. Snively is free and open year-round for day use only, sunrise to sunset — overnight use and camping are prohibited and the rule is enforced. There are two parking areas and a basic vault toilet on site. To protect soakers and the river, the BLM bans glass near the pools, so leave the bottles at home. Come prepared for the high desert with plenty of water, sun protection, and sturdy footwear, and pack out everything you bring — this beautiful spot has struggled with litter, and keeping it clean is on all of us. Spring and fall are especially pleasant, when the desert air is mild and the soak is just right.
