Disc Golf
Sonoma State University in Rohnert Park, California, holds a special place in disc golf history: it's the birthplace of the United Flyers of Sonoma (UFOS), one of the oldest disc golf clubs in the country, founded on the campus in 1976. For decades the university grounds hosted a disc golf course, and generations of North Bay players learned and loved the sport here. The campus remains a pleasant, walkable green space in the heart of Sonoma County wine country, even as the disc golf picture has changed.
The most important thing to know today is that the formal course has been removed. The baskets were taken out some time ago when the university expanded its on-campus housing, so there is no longer an installed, playable course on the grounds. If you've come across older listings or maps showing a Sonoma State course, this is the update that matters: the fixed targets are gone.
The disc golf spirit, however, hasn't left. The members of United Flyers of Sonoma still hold a weekly "Sunday Stroll" around the university campus, an informal object-course tradition that keeps the club's founding grounds in play in a casual, community way. It's a lovely bit of continuity for a historic club, though it's a social ritual rather than a maintained course you can drop in and play any day.
For anyone wanting an actual round nearby, the good news is that Rohnert Park and the surrounding Santa Rosa area are rich with disc golf. Just a few minutes from campus is Crane Creek Regional Park, a 128-acre park with an 18-hole course (the Steve Werner Memorial) plus hiking, biking and horseback trails; Taylor Mountain is about 15 minutes away, and Rosa Park roughly 25. Any of those delivers the full-course experience the campus no longer offers.
The Sonoma State campus itself is still a nice place for a walk, set in the gentle landscape of Sonoma County with the coastal hills nearby and the wineries of the Russian River and Sonoma Valley a short drive off, so a campus stroll pairs well with a wider day in the area.
If your goal is disc golf, head to Crane Creek or one of the other nearby courses with your discs; if it's history, a walk around the Sonoma State grounds, ideally with the UFOS Sunday Stroll, connects you to nearly fifty years of North Bay disc golf. Either way, come with comfortable shoes, water and sun protection for the mild Sonoma County climate, and an appreciation for where a great regional disc golf tradition began.
