Camp, Canoe, Hike, Kayak, and Swim

Beaver Creek Campground is a U.S. Forest Service campground and day-use area on the northwest shore of Priest Lake, in the Kaniksu portion of the Idaho Panhandle National Forests (Priest Lake Ranger District). It sits at about 2,500 feet under hemlock and cedar near the south end of the Thorofare, the 2.5-mile channel that links Priest Lake with Upper Priest Lake. The site is run for the Forest Service by Scenic Canyons Recreational Services under a special-use permit, and its swim beach on Tule Bay is open to day visitors as well as campers.

From the town of Priest River, drive about 36 miles north on State Highway 57 to Nordman, turn right onto Reeder Bay Road, and stay on the pavement for roughly 12 more miles. Near the Granite Creek bridge the county road becomes Forest Road 2512, and the campground entrance follows. Day visitors use the separate day-use lot, which holds about 20 cars. Campers who move their vehicle into that lot pay the day-use fee as well, since it is not covered by the overnight rate.

The beach is reached on foot by a steep trail or a set of steep steps, about 150 feet from the day-use parking, so it is hard going for anyone with limited mobility and there is no accessible route down. The shore is sand, and a section of water is roped off with swim buoys. No lifeguard is listed. Priest Lake is a large, clear lake fed by snowmelt streams off the Selkirk Mountains, so expect cold water, especially early in the season. Outside the buoys the lake deepens and boats are moving.

Day use costs $8 per vehicle. A season pass that covers the Scenic Canyons day-use and boat-launch areas on the Idaho Panhandle and Colville national forests is $52, or $54 when bought online. Campsites run $26 a night for a single, $52 for a double and $94 for the group site, with $10 for an extra vehicle, and reservations go through Recreation.gov. The season starts the Friday before Memorial Day and ends at noon on the last Monday in September, and the day-use areas close before the end of September, so the beach is shut from fall through spring.

A primitive sandy boat launch for boats up to 20 feet sits just south of the campground, so watch for motorboats near the swim area. A food storage order for bears covers the Kaniksu, and food and other attractants have to stay in a hard-sided vehicle unless you are using them. During dry summers Scenic Canyons can post fire restrictions for its Priest Lake campgrounds, limiting fires to propane stoves and propane fire rings with an on/off valve. The day-use area has no garbage service, and drinking water and vault toilets are in the campground.

Beaver Creek is also a trailhead. The Navigation Trail (No. 291) runs about 9 miles north toward Upper Priest Lake, and the Lakeshore Trail (No. 294) heads about 8 miles south along the main lake. Both are open to hikers and horseback riders. Paddlers start here for the Thorofare and the Upper Priest Lake Scenic Area at its north end, a popular stretch for birding. The campground was once the site of a Forest Service ranger station, and a stone chimney from it still stands.
