Swim
Colville River Flats is a laid-back, family-friendly swimming spot near Kettle Falls in northeastern Washington, set where the Colville River meets the upper reaches of Lake Roosevelt — the long reservoir behind Grand Coulee Dam on the Columbia. Part of the Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area, it's a mellow, low-key place to cool off on a hot summer day in the Columbia highlands.
What makes the Flats especially nice for swimming is the water itself: because it sits in a slower, shallower arm of the lake, the water here tends to be warmer and calmer than the main body of Lake Roosevelt, so it's more comfortable for wading, splashing, and easy swimming. It's a popular free local spot to spread out a towel and spend an afternoon by the water.
Getting there is simple: from Kettle Falls, head north on Highway 395, turn onto Highway 25, and go about four miles to a marked “Colville Flats” sign on the right, which leads down to the swimming area.
Summer is the season, when the water has warmed and the days are long. As with any reservoir, water levels can change through the season, so be mindful of footing and depth, keep an eye on children, and never swim alone. Bring water, sun protection, and a picnic, pack out your trash, and enjoy one of the Kettle Falls area's most relaxing places to take a dip.
