The Danskin Mountain OHV Area is one of southwestern Idaho's great motorized playgrounds, offering more than 160 miles of trail spread across over 60,000 acres of Boise National Forest between Boise and Mountain Home. For riders in the Treasure Valley it's a genuine destination: big country, huge mileage, mountain and valley views in every direction, and terrain that runs from easy cruising to properly challenging, so a mixed group can all find their day.

The trail mix matters when you're deciding what to trailer. A large portion of the system is designated for off-highway motorcycles only, which keeps the singletrack narrow, twisty and technical the way dirt bikers like it. There's also a dedicated ATV network in the southern part of the area that accommodates machines up to 48 inches wide. Even the ATV trails here stay narrow and twisty, so this isn't wide-open road riding; it rewards riders who enjoy working a trail.

The system is organized into three main sections with three main access trailheads, identified by the 300, 400 and 500 trail numbers. The Danskin #300 group is reached at the Bender Creek Trailhead, while the Three Point Mountain Trailhead offers an informational kiosk and a vault toilet. One important logistical note: this is a day-use area, and camping is not permitted, so overnight plans need to be made elsewhere in the surrounding forest.

Danskin's best-kept secret is its calendar. Because the area is largely treeless, it thaws out by around mid-April, noticeably earlier than most Idaho riding areas, which makes it the reliable choice for a genuinely good early-season ride when the higher country is still buried. Weather and conditions permitting, the trail system is normally open from April 11 through January 1, a long season by mountain standards.

That same lack of trees means very little shade and serious exposure in midsummer, when the high desert here bakes, and dust and heat both become real factors. Spring and fall are the sweet spot.

Come prepared to be self-sufficient: carry plenty of water and fuel, since there are no services out on the trail system, bring tools and spares, wear proper gear, and check current conditions and any seasonal closures before you tow out. Ride within the designated trail widths and stay on the trails, since that's what keeps 160 miles of it open. For Boise-area riders, Danskin is the backbone of the season.
