Ebenezer Church Beach is the swim beach at the Ebenezer Church Access of Jordan Lake State Recreation Area, run by the North Carolina Division of Parks and Recreation on land around the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' B. Everett Jordan Lake. The access sits on the east shore of the roughly 14,000-acre reservoir in Chatham County, about 10 miles west of downtown Apex, on a point that looks straight across the main body of the lake toward Vista Point. Locals usually just call it Ebenezer Beach.
The entrance is at 2582 Beaver Creek Road, about 2.3 miles south of US 64 on the right side of the road. The park road runs out toward the point past the boat ramp and several parking lots. For the beach, use the southern lot beside the restrooms, playground and Shelter 1. The sand is a short walk from there, and the park lists it as an accessible swim beach.
Swimming is allowed only inside the designated swim area off the sand. State park rules keep boats, rafts, canoes, surfboards and personal watercraft out of designated swimming areas, and they warn that drop-offs, boat traffic and underwater hazards make swimming anywhere else dangerous. The beach is sand, but the nearby shoreline mixes sand with rock ledges and old tree stumps standing in shallow water. As a reservoir, the water warms through the summer and stays calm on most days, though wind across the open lake can kick up chop. The park does not advertise lifeguards at its Jordan Lake beaches, so plan to watch your own group. Pets are not allowed on the swim beach.
Day-use gates open at 8 a.m. and close at 6 p.m. from November through February, 8 p.m. in March, April, September and October, and 9 p.m. from May through August. The gates are locked promptly, with no entry or exit after closing. Entry is free most of the year. A parking fee of $10 per vehicle per day ($5 with a senior aged 62 or older, or a military member or veteran, in the car) is charged on weekends and holidays in April, May and September and every day from Memorial Day to Labor Day. No separate swim pass is needed. Federal passes are not accepted.
Two hazards are worth knowing. In 2010 an 18-year-old drowned near the Ebenezer day-use area after racing a friend out to a no-wake buoy, so stay inside the swim area however calm the water looks. Jordan Lake also gets blue-green algae blooms in hot weather. Dogs died after swimming near the Farrington boat launch in 2022. Stay out of water that looks discolored or scummy, and check the state's algal bloom map before a summer visit. The park posts short beach closures, such as days lost to sand work, as alerts at the top of its website.
Ebenezer draws a lot of boaters. It has a 24-hour boat ramp, and the park calls it its best launch for windsurfing. You'll also find picnic shelters, a sand volleyball court, a playground and the easy Ebenezer Church Trail. Birders come for the view from the end of the point, which is among the best places in the Triangle to spot rare water birds, and amateur astronomers hold night sky sessions here. There is no camping at this access. The nearest campgrounds are Poplar Point and Crosswinds, a short drive north.
