Hike and Swim

Sandling Beach is the swim beach at the Sandling access of Falls Lake State Recreation Area, a day-use area run by the North Carolina Division of Parks and Recreation on the north shore of Falls Lake in Wake County. Falls Lake is a 12,410-acre reservoir the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built on the Neuse River, finishing the dam in 1981. The beach faces southwest across the open lake from a wooded shoreline on the west side of the access. Its mailing address is Wake Forest, but the closest town by road is Creedmoor, about 6 miles north on NC 50.

The entrance is at 14601 Creedmoor Road (NC 50), about 20 miles north of downtown Raleigh and across the highway from the Beaverdam access. Past the entrance station, the park road runs roughly a mile west to a string of parking lots along the shore. The swim area is below the largest lot in the middle of the access, where a short path leads down past a bathhouse with showers, restrooms, picnic tables and a playground. The state lists it as an accessible swim beach, and accessible parking and restrooms are provided.

The swim area is a designated stretch of lake off a sandy beach, and it is the only place at this access where swimming is allowed. State park rules limit swimming to designated areas and keep boats, rafts, surfboards and canoes out of them. The same rules warn that drop-offs, boat traffic and hidden underwater hazards make swimming elsewhere on the lake dangerous. Falls Lake is a Piedmont reservoir that warms up through the summer, so the water is at its most comfortable from June into September, and there is no current to speak of. The park pages make no mention of lifeguards, so keep an eye on your own group. Pets are not allowed on the swim beach.

Sandling is a seasonal access. Its swim beach and picnic shelters are typically open from April 1 to October 1, and the gate is closed for the rest of the year, so check the park's operating season schedule before going. Day-use hours run 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. from May through August and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. in April and September. Entry costs $10 per vehicle on weekends and holidays in April, May and September and every day from Memorial Day to Labor Day, or $5 per vehicle with a senior (62 or older), veteran or active-duty service member aboard. No separate swim pass is required. Weekdays in April, May and September carry no entrance fee.

Water quality is the main thing to watch. Wake County Onsite Water Protection samples Sandling Beach weekly for E. coli and Enterococci from late May through Labor Day weekend and posts the result on a colored sign at the beach: green means bacteria levels are within limits, yellow means elevated levels or a rain advisory, and red means the beach is closed. The county advises against swimming during or within a day after rain. Falls Lake beaches have been closed for high bacteria in past summers, and reopening has required clean results on consecutive tests.

Beyond the beach, the access has seven reservable picnic shelters spread along the shoreline, several picnic areas, a lakeside hiking trail linking the parking lots, and the short Woodland Nature Trail loop at the south end. The park's visitor center is a short drive south at 13304 Creedmoor Road, and boat ramps and more trails are at the neighboring Beaverdam and Highway 50 accesses.
