Hike and Swim

Linden County Park is a Genesee County Parks property in Fenton Charter Township, a short drive south of downtown Linden, and its swim spot is Clover Beach on the east shore of Byram Lake. Byram Lake is a small natural lake ringed mostly by homes, so the county beach is one of the few places the public can get into the water. The rest of the park is ball diamonds, tennis and basketball courts, a playground, picnic shelters and open lawn, with the beach tucked down the slope at the lake's edge.

The entrance is at 15349 S. Linden Road, about a mile south of the center of Linden and a few miles north of Fenton. There is a paved lot that serves the beach area, with marked accessible spaces, and a paved path with an ADA ramp runs from the parking area down to the sand, Pavilion 1 and the restrooms. The county warns that Pavilion 1, the shelter right next to the lake, sits a fair distance from both parking lots and is reached by stairs or the barrier-free path, so anyone who has trouble walking should plan for the trip down and back.

Clover Beach is open from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily, and admission is free. There are no lifeguards on duty at any time, so children need an adult watching them in the water. The county does not publish depth, bottom or water temperature figures for the swim area; expect a sandy beach dropping into a typical small Michigan inland lake that warms through July and August. The park itself is open daily from 8 a.m. to sunset, and stays open around the clock in winter when there is enough snow for snowmobiling.

A few rules matter at the beach. Dogs are not allowed on Genesee County Parks beaches. Tents and inflatables, including bounce houses, are not permitted on the beach side of the park. Alcohol, marijuana and illegal drugs are banned in all county parks, and rangers write tickets of up to $100. Water quality at Michigan public beaches is sampled by the local health department and posted on the state's BeachGuard map, so check it for Clover Beach after heavy rain or during hot spells before you swim.

The Byram Lake public boat launch inside the park is free but opens only on a short schedule: Friday through Sunday on the last two weekends of April and the first two weekends of October, 8 a.m. to sunset. Two trails cross the park, a 1.5-mile loop that takes about 35 minutes on foot and a second path through the middle that suits bikes. In winter the west side of the park has an intermediate sledding and toboggan hill, and the open ground is used for ungroomed cross-country skiing and snowmobiling once the ground is frozen and at least three inches of snow are down. Pavilions can be reserved through Genesee County Parks.
