Ludington State Park Lake Michigan Beach

Ludington State Park has two separate swimming beaches and they are not interchangeable. This listing is the Lake Michigan day-use beach on the west side of the park, the one at the historic Lake Michigan Beach House just south of where the Big Sable River empties into the lake. The other is the Hamlin Lake day-use beach on the east side, just under a mile away in a straight line and a bit more by park road. Decide which you want before you drive in. Lake Michigan here is cold, open and exposed to weather. Hamlin Lake is a shallow, protected inland lake that warms up and stays calm, which is why families with small children tend to end up there, and it is the usual fallback when the Lake Michigan side is flying a red flag.
Both day-use areas have buoyed swim areas, installed roughly from Memorial Day through Labor Day. DNR staff inspect and reposition the buoys about every two weeks as conditions change. When the buoys are not in the water, the area is not a designated swim area at all.
There are no lifeguards. The Michigan DNR states plainly that state parks have no beach guards and that visitors swim at their own risk. What the park runs instead is the Great Lakes beach flag warning system, updated by staff through the day. Green means low hazard, yellow means moderate surf or currents, red means high surf or strong currents with a recommendation to stay on the beach, and double red closes water access outright. Double red is not advisory: entering the water from the beach is against the law under Land Use Order 5.1.6, with a narrow exception for wind-powered or self-propelled wave-riding boards. Ludington is one of four state parks, along with Holland, Grand Haven and Warren Dunes, where roadside electronic signs post the current flag status before you reach the sand. The park also keeps life rings at its buoyed swim beaches and has added an EMILY remote rescue device for Lake Michigan water rescues.
The hazard here is specific and documented. The outlet of the Big Sable River is what has killed people at this park. High water drives a strong outflow current that pulls swimmers from near shore into open lake, and drownings at the river mouth have led the DNR to close the outlet to swimming during high-water periods. Rip currents, longshore currents and structural currents all occur along this shoreline. If a current takes you, flip onto your back, float to get your breathing under control, and follow the current rather than fighting it.
Entry is by Michigan Recreation Passport, a State of Michigan DNR vehicle fee rather than a beach charge. Effective January 1, 2026, a Michigan-registered vehicle pays $15 per year when purchased at license plate renewal, or $29 for two years, with a $5 convenience fee if bought afterward. There is no resident daily rate. A vehicle registered out of state pays $42 for the year or $12 for a single day.
This is Michigan's most-visited state park and the beach lots fill by midday on warm summer weekends. The rebuild that closed the park entirely from September 2024 until July 1, 2025 repaved the main road and added roughly 75 to 100 parking spaces, but overflow still spills onto roadside parking along M-116, so arrive early or come on a weekday. The Lake Michigan Beach House, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, has restrooms, interpretive exhibits and concessions. The Hamlin beach house adds changing courts and kayak, canoe and paddleboard rentals. Both swim areas have an accessible walkway to the water and floating beach wheelchairs, and the park loans track chairs at no cost. Most of the Lake Michigan shoreline is closed to pets to protect piping plover nesting habitat, with a pet-friendly stretch between the beach house and the river. One current caveat: the Skyline Trail, its connecting paths and the park amphitheater closed in September 2026 for a reconstruction expected to run into mid-2027.
