North Bend Park is the largest of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers parks on John H. Kerr Reservoir, the 50,000-acre impoundment of the Roanoke River that most people in Southside Virginia call Buggs Island Lake. The park covers a wooded point at the lower end of the lake, just southwest of Kerr Dam and close to the Corps Visitor Assistance Center, about 7 miles south of Boydton in Mecklenburg County. Each of its four camping loops has a small beach for campers, but the one listed here is the swim beach in the day-use area, which anyone can use after paying the day-use fee.

The park's address is 64 North Bend Drive, Boydton, VA 23917, roughly 20 miles west of South Hill. The entrance is off State Route 4 near Mays Chapel Road, about half a mile from the Corps' Joseph S.J. Tanner II Environmental Education Center. Every vehicle passes the gatehouse, and North Bend Drive then runs out through the park toward the boat ramps and picnic grounds. The day-use beach sits on a small cove on the south side of the park, with a paved lot and a picnic area right behind the sand.

The beach is a modest strip of sand at the head of the cove. The Corps does not publish depth or bottom details, and the depth off the sand changes a lot with the lake level. The water is warm by midsummer, as on most Piedmont reservoirs. None of the Corps or Recreation.gov listings mention lifeguards, so plan on swimming unguarded and keep children within reach. The main boat ramp is a few hundred yards up the shore, so stay inside the swim area and watch for boats and personal watercraft.

This is not a free spot. All vehicles entering the North Bend day-use area pay a $7 day-use fee, including groups that have rented a picnic shelter; the fee is waived for people holding a current campground reservation. The gatehouse is staffed from April through October, and the Corps lists park hours of 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily from May 1 to September 15, and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday (9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday) in April and from September 15 through October 31. Alcohol, golf carts and ATVs are prohibited in the park.

Check the lake level before you drive out. As of October 2026 the Recreation.gov pages for North Bend carry a Corps alert that ongoing drought has left the lake below normal, several boat ramps (including the Main and Loop A ramps) are closed, and the designated swimming areas are dry. In wet years the problem runs the other way, and high water has flooded swim areas around Kerr Lake before. The North Bend gatehouse is at 434-738-0059 and the Visitor Assistance Center at 434-738-6143, and the Corps posts ramp and day-use status on its John H. Kerr Reservoir (Buggs Island) Facebook page.

The rest of the park makes a full day easy. There are more than 200 tent and RV sites with showers, open picnic shelters plus the reservable Osage shelter, three boat ramps, an amphitheater, a disc golf course and a paved 1.5-mile bike path. The Liberty Nature Trail (1.5 miles) and the Robert Munford Trail (5.5 miles) are a short drive away, and below the dam Tailrace Park has an accessible canoe and kayak launch on the Roanoke River, where bald eagles winter around Buggs Island. The Tanner Center runs weekend programs from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
