Pymatuning State Park is one of the biggest and most beloved parks in Pennsylvania, a 16,892-acre expanse wrapped around the largest lake in the Commonwealth, the sprawling 17,088-acre Pymatuning Reservoir on the Ohio border near Jamestown. It's consistently among the most visited state parks in Pennsylvania, and for good reason: this is a full-scale summer destination with swimming beaches, one of the largest campgrounds in the state, superb fishing, and a genuinely famous roadside spectacle that has drawn families here for generations.
That spectacle is the Linesville spillway, known far and wide as "the place where the ducks walk on the fishes' backs." Visitors toss bread into the water, and the carp gather in such astonishing density that ducks and geese scramble across their backs to reach the crumbs. It's strange, hilarious, and unforgettable, and it has been a Pennsylvania rite of passage for decades. The park pairs that oddity with serious wildlife watching: the surrounding wetlands and lake draw eagles, waterfowl and migrating birds in impressive numbers.
The water is the main event. Four managed swimming beaches, Linesville, Tuttle, Jamestown #1 and the Jamestown Campground beach, are generally open from 8 a.m. to sunset between Memorial Day and Labor Day. The reservoir is a boating and paddling playground, and the fishing is excellent and varied, with walleye, muskellunge, crappie, perch, bluegill, largemouth and smallmouth bass, channel catfish and, of course, the legendary carp. Ice fishing keeps the lake busy through the winter as well.
For staying over, Pymatuning is hard to beat. Roughly 657 campsites spread across three separate camping areas make it one of the largest camping operations in Pennsylvania, and 25 modern cabins are available to rent, each with a furnished living area, kitchen, dining space, restroom and two or three bedrooms. Summer weekends and holidays book up early, so reservations are worth making well ahead.
The park sits at 2660 Williamsfield Road in Jamestown, in Pennsylvania's northwestern corner, close enough to the Ohio line that the lake is shared between the two states. The beaches have posted hours and swimming is limited to the designated areas, and as on any large reservoir the open water can turn choppy quickly when the wind picks up, so it pays to watch conditions if you're out in a small boat.
Come with sun protection, a cooler, fishing gear and a loaf of bread for the spillway, and give yourself a full day at minimum. Between the beaches, the boat launches, the miles of shoreline, and the ducks marching across a living carpet of carp, Pymatuning delivers a distinctly Pennsylvania kind of summer that people come back to year after year.
