Disc Golf

Runaway Rocks Disc Golf at Rocky Ford is a handsome, privately held course in the rolling countryside near Franklinton, North Carolina, north of Raleigh, and it's a genuinely different experience from the typical municipal park layout. Set on beautiful green grass beneath two-hundred-year-old trees, the course combines fairly open terrain with challenging elevation, which makes it both scenic and honest: you can see your line, and you still have to earn it.

The course grew up over time. It started as a nine-hole layout and was expanded to a full eighteen in 2015, and it's registered with the Professional Disc Golf Association, with enough standing in the North Carolina scene to have hosted sanctioned events including the 2022 North Carolina Junior Disc Golf Championships. There's an active community around it, including a dedicated Facebook group where players coordinate and follow course news.

The single most important thing to know is that this is a private course, and players are asked to call ahead for permission before showing up. That's a meaningful difference from a public park, and it's the reason the place stays in the condition it's in. Turning up unannounced isn't the way this course works; making contact first is both the rule and the courtesy, and it's what keeps a privately owned course open to visiting players at all.

For those who arrange a round, the setting is the reward. Mature hardwoods, open grass fairways and genuine elevation change give the course a country-estate feel that's rare in disc golf, and the terrain rewards players who can work with slope rather than fight it. The relative openness makes it friendlier to developing players than a heavily wooded course, while the elevation keeps stronger players honest.

Central North Carolina weather sets the calendar. Spring and fall are ideal, summer brings heat and humidity along with afternoon storms, and the grass fairways can be soft after rain. As on any private property, leaving the place exactly as you found it matters more than usual.

Bring water, sun protection for the open holes, insect repellent, and a phone call made before you leave the house. For players in the Raleigh, Franklinton and Youngsville area willing to plan ahead, Runaway Rocks offers a well-kept, scenic, genuinely enjoyable eighteen that most drop-in players never get to see.
