Seeley Lake Campground
Seeley Lake
Camp, Canoe, Kayak, and Swim
Seeley Lake Campground is a Lolo National Forest campground and day-use area on the west shore of Seeley Lake, run by the Seeley Lake Ranger District. Recreation.gov lists it as Seeley Lake Lolo Campground (MT). Seeley Lake is a glacial lake in the valley between the Swan Range and the Mission Mountains, and it is one of roughly six lakes on the Clearwater River known as the Chain of Lakes. The Forest Service describes the campground as heavily used and a popular spot for swimming, boating, fishing and picnicking, with big old Western larch shading the sites and the Swan Range across the water to the east.
The Boy Scout Road bridge over the Clearwater River, on the southwest side of the lake, was closed by Missoula County in November 2023 after a Montana Department of Transportation inspection found it could no longer carry traffic safely, and Recreation.gov now calls the closure permanent. That cuts off the short route from town. Instead, drive north from the town of Seeley Lake on Montana Highway 83 for about 5 miles, past the ranger station, turn left (west) onto Boy Scout Road and follow it about 4 miles around the north end of the lake. The campground entrance is on the left. Inside, take the first left; the day-use parking is along that road on the way to loop 3, a short walk from the beach. Camping in the parking lot is not allowed.
The day-use area has two beaches, a roped-off swim area, a paved boat launch with trailer parking and a handful of picnic sites. The main beach is a strip of shoreline facing east across the open lake. No lifeguard is listed for the site, so you swim at your own risk, and the swim area ropes are the only separation from boat traffic. This is a busy lake for motorboats and waterskiers in July and August, so keep kids inside the ropes and watch for boats near the launch. This is a mountain lake fed by the Clearwater River, so expect cold water early in the summer.
Day use is free. Recreation.gov states that no fees or reservations are required for day use, and day-use hours are 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Mountain Time. Camping is separate: the 29 sites cost $20 per night plus $5 for each vehicle after the second, and all of them are reserved through Recreation.gov. The campground season for 2026 runs May 22 to September 8, and the gate closes for the year the Tuesday after Labor Day, so plan a swim during the summer season. The Forest Service page shows the site as closed outside that window. Early or late in the season, check the Forest Service page or call the Seeley Lake Ranger District at 406-677-2233 before you go.
This is grizzly and black bear country, and the Lolo National Forest has a food and wildlife attractant storage order in effect, so keep coolers and trash locked up when you leave the beach. Dogs must be on a leash no longer than 6 feet. The campground has flush and vault toilets, drinking water and trash cans, and a host lives on site in summer. Boat, canoe, kayak and bike rentals are in the town of Seeley Lake, which the Forest Service puts about 4 miles southeast, along with gas and groceries. The Clearwater River Canoe Trail is close by, and the old-growth larch of the Girard Grove, including a tree over 1,000 years old, is a short drive away.
