Silver Beach County Park

Silver Beach County Park is a Berrien County park on Lake Michigan at the mouth of the St. Joseph River, at 101 Broad Street in downtown St. Joseph. The county counts about 2,450 feet of lake frontage here, of which roughly 1,600 feet is set aside as a marked public swimming area during the summer. The sand is wide and flat, the water shelves out gently, and the whole thing sits a two minute walk from the bluff stairs, the Amtrak platform and State Street, which is why this is the busiest stretch of shoreline in southwest Michigan on a hot Saturday.
The ground under your towel used to be Silver Beach Amusement Park, which ran from 1891 until 1971. The Shadowland ballroom and the Comet coaster are gone, but the names survive on the pavilions and the neighborhood. What stands next to the beach now is the Silver Beach Center, the Silver Beach Carousel and the Whirlpool Compass Fountain. Those are separate operations with their own hours and their own admission, and none of them is included in beach access.
Parking is the only fee for the beach itself. Berrien County Parks charges $8 per vehicle for county residents and $15 per vehicle for everyone else, collected May through September, with an annual permit at $40 regardless of where you live. Walking in costs nothing. The lot holds just over 600 cars and the county puts out Lot Full signs when it fills, which happens early on holiday weekends. The park is open dawn to dusk all year. Restrooms run early May to mid October, the concession stand runs Memorial Day to Labor Day, and kayak and paddleboard rentals plus a free beach wheelchair are available in season. Alcohol is not allowed, dogs must stay leashed and on the sidewalk, and there is no camping and no overnight parking.
Take the water seriously here. Lifeguards work the towers only from early June to mid August, roughly 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., weather permitting. The 2026 season ended on August 10. Green, yellow and red flags fly at the towers, but only while guards are posted, so for most of the year there is no flag and no one watching. The twin piers and the river outlet make this one of the more dangerous places on the Michigan shore for structural currents, the kind that run hard alongside a pier and pull swimmers out along it. People have died here. On September 1, 2026 a seven year old from South Bend was pulled from the water at night, weeks after the guards had gone home, and did not survive. Stay well clear of the pier walls when there is any wave action, and check the National Weather Service beach hazards outlook before you go in.
The Berrien County Health Department samples the water for E. coli through the summer and posts results to the Michigan EGLE BeachGuard system. Silver Beach usually tests clean because of how the current moves past the river mouth, but neighboring beaches have gone under advisory in the same week, so it is worth a look before a swim. One more thing worth knowing: Tiscornia Park, on the north side of the channel, is a different beach with different access, and photos of it get labeled Silver Beach constantly.
