South Beach sits at the south end of the Marquette waterfront, off Lakeshore Boulevard beside the city's Shiras Steam Plant, and it is the beach local families pick when they want Lake Superior without Lake Superior's usual shock. The City of Marquette owns it and runs it as a public park. There is no entry fee, no beach parking fee and no season pass. The city's adopted fee schedule charges for Tourist Park camping and for reserving picnic areas, and lists nothing at all for getting onto a beach.
A paved lot sits right at the top of the sand, with two sets of stairs and a ramp down to the beach, so the water is reachable without a hike from a trailhead. Restrooms and a playground are on site. The thing that makes this spot work is the rock break wall running north from the beach: it blocks the swell that rolls in from the northeast and leaves a wide, shallow, sandy shelf that a swimmer can wade out across for a long way before it drops. Shallow water over sand warms faster than open lake, which is why South Beach opens up for swimming weeks ahead of the more exposed city beaches. Looking north from the water you get the Marquette skyline and the hills south of town.
Temperature is the whole story on this lake and the numbers are worth knowing before you drive up. NOAA's Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory publishes a daily lake average for Lake Superior. In 2023 that average was about 41 F in mid June, 47 F on July 1, 51 F by mid July, peaked at 64.1 F on August 8, and was still near 59 F in mid September. South Beach reads warmer than those lake averages because of the sheltered shelf, but early season swims here are still cold water swims. The Superior Watershed Partnership keeps a buoy a short distance up the shore off Presque Isle that reports live surface temperature.
Lifeguards work the beach in season under the Marquette Fire Department, which handles waterfront safety for the city rather than Parks and Recreation. The 2026 guarded season runs from May 23 through Labor Day. The city also posts a colored flag at South Beach and at its other guarded beaches. The flags are advisories about surf and current, not a closure system, and they change through the day.
Do not confuse this beach with Picnic Rocks, roughly a mile and a half north along the same shoreline. Picnic Rocks has killed fifteen people since 1963 in the current that runs between the shore and the rocks, and Travel Marquette flatly tells visitors not to swim there. That reputation belongs to that spot, not to South Beach.
South Beach is on the state monitoring list. It is sampled weekly for E. coli from late May into early September and results are posted publicly. Closures do happen: three Marquette beaches were shut over the Fourth of July weekend in 2021, and South Beach itself closed for high bacteria in June 2022. Check the current sample before you plan a day around it, especially after heavy rain.

The Lake Superior coastline is rugged, wild, and notorious for shipwrecks that attest to the combined dangers of water, wind, and waves. Until recently, the 185-mile (300-km) section of shoreline from the Huron Islands to Whitefish Point was without any modern offshore equipment to provide critical coastal storm data such as wave height and water temperature.

Near the city operated electric generating plant off Lake Street, South Beach is often an early season swim because the water is just a tad warmer. The water is shallow and that contributes to warmer water early. The break wall to the northeast protects this beach from some bigger waves from that direction. Additional amenities are playground equipment and bathrooms.
